Rotavirus vaccine. Help please :(

Emetophobe/germophobe over here!
Baby has just had rotavirus vaccine. It went all over/around his mouth and on my hand as he choked on it. I was told about careful hand washing after nappy changes etc. But I'm just so worried that I'll end up getting a stomach bug. I absolutely can't handle being sick. It sends my anxiety through the roof.
Did anyone catch rotavirus from their babies when they had the vaccine?
DS is sound asleep but I feel guilty already because I know that having his face near my face is going to make me so anxious and also feeding/winding him etc. 😢💔 I'm not sure I can handle the anxiety and guilt for 2 weeks!

I never caught it. I assume you wiped his face and cleaned your own hands straight after he had it?
If you wash your hands thoroughly after a nappy change and don't touch near your mouth you'll be fine. I done clinical hand-washing afterwards but I know DP wouldn't have and he was fine.

@Peach01 the nurse wiped his face with a tissue but it was more like spreading around his mouth even more. I did wash my hands in the clinic area and wiped his mouth with a baby wipe when I got home.
I already wash my hands regularly anyway and after nappy changes etc but like you, I know DP won't wash his hands as good as I would hope.

They often need a reminder don't they. A lot of HV tell people to wash their hands twice each time to make sure, you could tell him to do that.

Try not to worry, OP. I've never heard of anyone catching the virus from their babies following vaccinations. Also, you don't need to worry about the vaccination solution itself getting on your hand. Just continue to wash your hands after nappy changes and tell your partner how important it is to you that he does his properly too. Honestly, it is highly, highly unlikely that you would catch anything from your baby. Catching a virus from someone who has had a live vaccination is not even close to the risk of catching it from someone who is actually ill from the virus itself.

If it helps to reassure you the risk of us adults catching rotavirus from the vaccine was so small that it was recommended that our fosterling still be vaccinated despite the fact DH was on active chemo (which buggers the immune system). Neither of us caught anything from the babies we have cared for when they have had their rotavirus vaccines.

My DB caught it after his baby was vaccinated but it was very very mild - he wasn't sick or anything, just felt a bit off.

That's good to know. I suppose it's such a minute dose of the actual virus... Only really a problem to people who are immuno-compromised.
New2020 · 16/06/2021 22:12

I was exactly the same and paranoid about getting sick especially with a csection

I was told it can make you sick after being digested..so to thoroughly wash hands after nappy changes. So I felt a bit better when my baby was given the vaccination and it went everywhere too

My husband did the first few poo nappies as I have the same anxieties..and then for two weeks after I thoroughly washed hands and used dettol wipes on the changing mat after a pooey nappy

Almostascot · 16/06/2021 22:37

It’s went round the mouth of both my kids when they had it as well If you think about it the dose of the vaccine isn’t enough to make the baby sick, so the small amount that went on his mouth won’t be enough to make a grown adult sick.

Regarding the nappy changes I have never heard of anyone getting sick who has been washing their hands afterwards (including DH who’s hand washing technique is not what I would like it to be!!) And that includes a couple of people who are on immunosuppressant medication. Hope all goes well for you.

Thank you all! I feel a bit more reassured now. I'll just make sure I carry on with good hand washing and good tip @New2020 re the dettol wipes! I have a few packets so I'll put one by the side of his changing unit

Have just stumbled over this thread as I am also very anxious about catching it from my baby. OP did you become unwell in the end? X

emetophobe12 · 22/07/2021 17:57

@Oliversmummy19 not at all. I used gloves to change his dirty nappies and washed his bum under running water afterwards and then gave him a proper bath later on in the evening. I also used dettol wipes to clean his changing mat afterwards and washed any soiled clothes with dettol laundry cleanser and then put them on a normal wash afterwards. Oh and clinical hand washing. Both me and DP were fine

We didn’t catch it. Just wash your hands after every nappy change (which I assume you do anyway) using soap and hot water and you will be fine.
