So 7wk old is 98th for Head and length but dropped to 50th for weight.

Ideally they should all be similar or within 20%? How much does it matter if they're not?

How detrimental is it for the weight to be at 50% with head and length at 98%?

Obviously I want the best for my child but I'm just wondering how worried I should be at this stage? We're trying our best through changes to feeding to up the weight. Is it possible to get the weight back to within 20% of the 98th?

Baby's never lost weight apart from the first week but has gained very very slowly.

Hi OP. The weight/length ratio is not always matched. Was your baby 50th centile for weight from birth too? As long as they continue to track the same centile that they were born with, everything is going splendidly! My (4th) baby is the same as yours. 90th for length etc, 50th for weight. He has continued to put weight on very well, keeping him in the same centile he was born with. I'm delighted with that. I expect it just means he's going to be a tall, slim child.

From reading your post again, it reads as though his birth weight centile was higher... Is that correct? If your baby has dropped two centiles, it is definitely worth looking into the reason why. What does your HV say? Are you BF or FF? Even if your baby has dropped one centile, we don't worry too much about that, as long as they're putting weight on, even if slowly. I wasn't sure from your OP what your baby's centile was at birth?

My baby started dropping centiles from birth, born on 95th centile for both weight and height and by six months he was on the 9th centile.

I was really worried at the time even though feeding was going well (formula by that point) he was weighed regularly and by the time he hit the 9th centile we were referred to a paediatrician to ensure there was nothing else going on. They said he was was absolutely fine and it's apparently very normal for "bigger" babies to drop centiles as their birth weight is determined by you inutero and the nourishment they have received from you via the placenta - some people just have a super efficient placenta! After birth their genetics play a bigger role in determining their size.

I would just make sure that you get weight checks regularly for the time being, but if baby is having plenty of wet and dirty nappies and is content then it may just be completely normal. Speak to your health visitor though if you're concerned about feeding.

My 2 year old is is and was 98th head & lengths and 50th for weight! Long ans skinny, always been and still is. Clever, happy cookie - I wouldn't worry xx

gemloving · 15/06/2021 14:26

Sorry, this is not in relation to gaining weight slowly, my 6 week old was born on the 50th and is now on the 9th - I'm also worried about this but the HVs don't seems to take me seriously x

Confuzzled12345 · 15/06/2021 14:41

@Somethingsnappy she was 98th at birth, EMCS and not weighed 24hrs after so possibly a little heavier from IV fluids.
HV aware and we've discussed changes to feeding. Combi from day 1 but we are now going to push more formula due to poor BF supply.

DD2 was born on the 75 centile for weight and 25 centile for head size. She say a paediatrician for the first few months for allergies and he said it didn’t matter as long as they stayed consistent.

@gemloving sorry to hear that. What does your GP say? Have you had /booked the 6-8wk check?

@Confuzzled12345 I had my 6 week review over the phone today and the GP said we'll discuss this at his 8 week review. I am going to see a paediatrician for other reasons next Monday, so will ask about that as well.
