Sterilising bottles

Hi

I’m due my baby any day now, if I’m sterilising 6 bottles in my microwave steriliser the way the instructions read is that as soon as I take the lid off it to use a bottle the others are then not sterilised. Surely that isn’t right is it? Or what would be the point in putting the 6 in. A quick google suggests the same so I’m looking for real life experiences lolSmile

Technically they are not sterile, so they have to say that in the instructions, but they are clean and safe enough to use. The purpose of using a steriliser is to kill off any lingering bacteria from the previous feed, you don't need a totally sterile bottle (this would be impossible anyway) for a feed.

I don't use a microwave steriliser but don't you just take all the bottles out and assemble them at once and then use when needed?

Correlation · 13/06/2021 12:52

Yes they'll never be perfectly sterile once out. They'll be clean enough - it's the milk that bacteria quickly multiplies in so it's important to wash that off then sterilise, but after that there's not much else you can do.

Thank you, I bought a perfect prep so that also gives it a blast of steam before it makes the bottle I’m sure. So the best thing to do is take them out and build them up rather than leaving in the steriliser until needed.

Yes, after sterilising assemble the bottles and then use as needed

The Milton cold water steriliser is also really easy! You just leave the bottles in the water until you need them :-)

Ditto! I bought a tall airtight container from Asda for £5 that fits 5l easily. Just do the cold water method, change the water once a day and dump everything that you need for the next 24 hours in it. Microwave sterilisers are best for emergency sterilising ime, you can get single bottle ones.

Milton cold water sterilisation is the best and easiest method.

Read the instructions on the box of formula, and make up bottles according to the instructions.

Shes asking about sterilising bottles, not making up formula
Howzaboutye · 13/06/2021 22:34

Yes and everyone seems to be saying to make up all the bottles once they are out of the sterilizer. But that's not what you are supposed to do. Just trying to help the op.

dementedpixie · 13/06/2021 22:36

We are saying she can assemble the empty bottles out of the steriliser. Noone has told her to put milk in them in advance

Bluemeadowbaby · 13/06/2021 22:44

I did this with my MAM bottles in the microwave, when they're done empty the water remaining and make them up and they'll be okay for the day. Hope that helps ☺️

Babyontheway21 · 13/06/2021 22:54

I have the MAM bottles too, I know not to make the bottles up with milk, it was just the sterilising I wasn’t sure about but I think the majority say that they are good to go as long as they have been washed sterilised and built up again. Smile

Sorry op! I thought 'making up' meant the whole thing, not reassembling. You will be grand! Good luck :)

Thanks Smile
