I bought a fan but it just blows the hot air around. He’s 14 months. What can I do? Confused

Let him sleep with just a nappy and a vest. It will drop down as the day goes on.

Close the curtains and keep the windows shut until its cooled down outside.

Have u shut the curtains if the sun is shining in?

Put some ice in front of the fan so it's blowing cool air

Keep the curtains closed all day.

Curtains are permanently closed, although they are quite thin?

Windows open, curtains closed. He can sleep in just a nappy.

The only thing that will bring the temperature down and keep it down, is an air con unit.
Here’s what you can do otherwise:

  • buy a thermostat
  • as soon as you get up in the morning, open every window. The temp should drop within 10 mins
  • leave the windows open and watch the thermostat
  • the second it starts going back up, close your windows and curtains (and shutters if you have them)
  • turn on fans to circulate the air
You can also put bowls of ice cubes in front of the fans which can lower room temp by up to 1 degree.

if you have a house

open the front or back door (on the shady side)

open the loft hatch

natural convection will suck fresh air in, up and out (most UK roofs have a ventilation gap under the eaves, round the edges). Stand in the loft hatch and you will be amazed at the air current.

You can leave the loft hatch open at night when the door is shut, and warm air from the house will continue to rise into the loft. If you have a sealed, draught-free door, prop open the letter box. it will help a bit.

In hot weather I leave my loft hatch continuously open (South Coast).
if you are in a flat, open windows on opposite sides so you get a throughflow of air, but not if the wind is blowing from the sunny side as it will blow in warm air.

DD's window gets his with the late afternoon sun so can hit 25/26C. We let her have a nap in just a vest/cotton romper.

To minimise the sun coming in as we have blinds we have also put up blackout film on the windows.

Our entire house is about 30 degrees all summer :o (we are not in the UK)

He is 14 months, don't worry. Put him to bed in short pyjamas and think nothing of it. Babies live in warm countries and they don't all expire overnight.
