Open bite from dummy - experiences?

I feel like an absolute failure, I’ve just noticed my 16mo has an open bite from her dummy.

Parents who have been in the same boat - will this correct itself if I cut the dummy now? I’m so upset for not noticing sooner.

I’m familiar with “underbite” and “overbite” but I’ve never heard of “open bite” until now. I can understand it from the context but I’m thinking you’ve already googled or seen a dentist about it to be using the technical term? So what advice have you already heard/read? Is it more that you’re upset than wanting information?

@RickiTarr its basically where if they close their jaw, there is still a gap between their upper and lower teeth if you know what I mean. If you can imagine the shape of where a dummy sits between the teeth.

Yep feeling upset and wanting to hear from people who have been in the same boat.

I have read that it can correct itself (not always) once the dummy is removed so I want to hear other experiences with this.

Well have a bump but see a dentist too when you can and don’t waste time feeling guilty.

It will disappear very quickly if you lose the dummy (and it's not replaced with fingers!).

My dc was later giving up the dummy and had an open bite. It went away within a few months and teeth are normal now.

I'm a dentist and a mummy to two girls who both have/had dummy.

The dentist in me will tell you that dummy Ian great for speech and bite however this tends to be for those who use a dummy all day.if used for sleep etc it's generally OK.

The mum in me however rubderstands how hard it is to take it away and that they end up using far more than just for sleep. My eldest had a dummy until her fourth birthday and a slight open bite as well. 4 months after stopping the dummy her bite returned to normal.

It's not too late, thumb suckling is a harder one to combat!
