What are you dressing your babies in for sleep?

Help please!
Anxious FTM here. Baby is 8 weeks old and it's currently 23.5C in our room. We have a high powered fan on with windows and door open with all upstairs windows open and it's not cooling down at all.
I have him in a short sleeved vest and a 1.5tog sleeping bag. Should I change him out of the sleeping bag and just use a cellular blanket? He does kick blankets off but I suppose it's not the worst thing right now.
What are you all dressing babies in in this muggy horrible heat?

Mine has just been sleeping in his nappy, will probably put him in a vest tonight or short sleeve pjs since it's a little cooler today Smile

I had 3 of mine in July and for daytime naps nappy only.

for warm evenings just a nappy or nappy plus sleeveless popper vest
for "cooler" evenings: as above plus large muslin as blanket or nappy & 1 tog baby grow
as they were newborn I always erred on the side of being cooler rather than hotter because by default they wouldn't ever get too cold - they'd be up several times a night anyway often needing new clothes so I'd adjust to whatever the temperature was.

@TheLovelinessOfDemons

The advice is one more layer than you're wearing.
sorry but for very hot weather that's wrong. if it's so hot that I'm naked there's no way I'd put anything else on a baby but a nappy

@Nazz10

Thanks everyone. I find it so hard. It took me weeks to settle myself down at night time until I got used to how he is in different clothing/sleeping bags and I finally started to feel confident and comfortable with my choices but now my anxieties have all come back again. I think I'm going to keep him in just his vest. Through my struggles with sleepwear I kept telling myself that I would rather him be cold than too warm (due to SIDS) and that he would wake up and cry if he was uncomfortably cold
Please don't let yourself be anxious about it and it's absolutely right to under dress rather than over dress- he will let you know if he's chilly!

The problem with threads like this and in any guidance is that every baby is different and ten babies could be in ten rooms of the same temperature and be comfortable in all different combinations of clothing and covers. I was anxious about this too and often made myself feel worse by questioning why someone else was doing things so differently to how I was but really it is only you who knows your baby and it's still going to be a bit trial and error at times to figure out what to dress them in :)

@TheLovelinessOfDemons the one more layer rule doesn't work for me. I always sleep naked. Even in the freezing cold winter

@TrashKitten10 thank you. I'm a very anxious person anyway. Seriously it's exhausting but I'm getting better. But yes sometimes I do wonder why I post on threads because it just makes my anxiety worse sometimes

I ended up dressing him in just a vest and had a cellular blanket over his legs and he was a little chilly with the fan on so I think tonight I'll put him in a long sleeve vest with the blanket on his legs. The temperature in the room stayed the same allll night 🙄

Ah OK. The long sleeve vest and blanket sounds about right.

Nazz10 · 10/06/2021 15:14

He mustn't have felt TOO uncomfortable though because he slept for 7 hours before waking up for his feed!

It was 25C in DS’s room last night! I’m dressing him in a nappy plus short sleeved vest. He starts off with a blanket too, but I usually find he’s rolled over and kicked it off by the morning. He’s 14 months btw.

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 10/06/2021 15:50

Mine is in a short sleeve vest and swaddled loosely in a big muslin. They are 3 weeks. Seems to be ok, and they are waking every 2 hours or so for milk so I can check them then.

I really recommend getting a 0.5 tog sleeping bag. I like the old style grobags best and you can still get them on eBay. It’s only the start of the summer months so you’ll get some use out of it. The nice thing is you can vary the layers underneath - absolutely boiling just have a nappy under, bit cooler a vest, bit cooler a single layer footless babygro (that’s what we have right now), bit cooler a vest and babygro etc.
