15 month old has a fever again!

My 15 month old had a virus last week, we had him covid tested and it was negative. Cough, runny nose, clingy, off his food and temps up and down for a few days, highest was 39.9.

He seemed better and has been fine for the last couple days and now he’s got a temp of 39.5 again!! He wasn’t himself today, but no obvious symptoms apart from being off his food a bit, this fever and a bit clingier and moodier than usual.

He’s my first so I’m quite panicked. Is this fairly normal? Could it be the same virus or has he caught something else now!? He doesn’t go to nursery!

Poor fella.
Pretty normal to pick up every bug going from nursery.
Are you dosing up with paracetamol alternating with ibuprofen?
Lots of fluids, keep an eye on urine/wet nappies.

Look on NHS choices for evidence based care advice.

Don’t forget, bugs don’t survive heat hence why the body heats up, so it’s a normal and natural reaction to infection.
We just manage the uncomfortable symptoms of high temperature.

Onthegrapevine · 09/06/2021 21:39

@imaginethemdragons We gave him one dose of Calpol earlier today when he was clearly miserable but haven’t given him anything since as he’s been in bed since 7. I figured if he’s sleeping then there’s no need as he’s comfortable enough.

Just worried about this recurrent temp.

Horribly normal and building a good strong immunity as he is forming antibodies to the infections.
You may not get a reason for the temperature, other times it’s obvious, chicken pox/tonsil infections, tummy bugs etc
It’s just about knowing the red flags and where to get help. 111 are great for assessing, advising and can make appointments to be seen out of hours if necessary.
But the nhs on line information apps are also brilliant.

My 16 month old is the same. We had him Covid tested last week (negative) and had to take him back today as he had another temperature of 39.9. just before that he had been on penicillin for an infection (after yet Another negative Covid test) I recall from my older DC's that once they picked something up and got run down, it usually meant they would pick up everything going for a while. My DCs have all been at nursery though so there's always plenty of germs around! However if your instinct is that something isn't right take them to the GP (assuming you get another negative Covid).

I know the thought I'd that teething doesn't cause temperature but it has for my boy every teething episode.

But otherwise, yes it's shit and horrible to see. Just continue with calpol and try and offer fluids more regularly. Poor soul

DD has also recently suffered from several fevers, every two or three weeks it has seemed. Most recent one we ended up calling 111 and going to the out of hours clinic where she was diagnosed with tonsillitis and prescribed antibiotics.

gemloving · 10/06/2021 03:20

Mine is 2 1/2 & has the same symptoms _ it's making it's rounds at the childminders.

Pre Covid, my son was sick all the time, we ended up at the hospital a good few times as he was prone to fevers and they were 40.5-40.7 at times.

Keep up the calpol (I give suppositories as they bring the temperature down within 15 minutes and usually 1+ whole degree within an hour).

If you're concerned, always call the GP. I personally find 111 awful, the people on the other side on the phone are not medically trained whatsoever & ask silly questions when you need actual advice.

Sending hugs your way! The pandemic babies haven't been exposed to any illness so if this this the first time happening, it's even more worrying.

If he doesn't seem any better or his temperature is still very high ask to be seen by your GP, aside from Covid (negative) he could have a throat infection or an ear infection and may need antibiotics. My 18 month old was the same 2 weeks ago, negative Covid test but high fever and unwell. He had a throat infection. Hope he feels better soon.

Chocolatetrifle · 11/06/2021 13:38

Ibuprofen medicine is also good for reducing fever and any inflammation.

Onthegrapevine · 11/06/2021 14:22

So the GP saw him. Apparently everything seems fine but his throat is a “little red”

She said to keep up the Calpol or alternate with Ibuprofen if he’s really unsettled and we need to give him another dose in between. We haven’t needed to, but his temp is still playing up.

I can’t get my head around it, if we don’t give him anything for it then he could wake up with a normal temp then by midday he’s 39.9, by 3 back to normal, then back up again before bed to 38.5 ish. Is this kind of temperature normal? I’d have expected it to either be up or down but not bouncing back and forth like that through out the day.

This is us although DD is almost 21 months. Was ill for over a week with a respiratory infection and ended up in a&e with croup, temp up and down to 40 over 5 days. Then better and back at nursery for a few days, sent back home today with another temp. It’s relentless!

DD’s temp fluctuates a lot when ill, don’t worry about it as long as it responds to medication and they are ok in themselves. The fever does good rather than harm.

Chocolatetrifle · 11/06/2021 14:35

Glad the GP has seen your DS. The fact that his throat is a little red will be enough to give him discomfort. Hopefully it will settle after a few days. The temperature will always go up once the calpol dose is wearing off and if they are still unwell and fighting the infection. It will therefore go up and down.

My DC if they have a fever and seem to be asleep will always feel hot to touch and not be asleep as peacefully as usual. I have given calpol whilst they are in bed by holding upright and waiting for them to swallow as this will ensure you are still fighting the fever overnight. Hope your DS feels better soon.

Onthegrapevine · 11/06/2021 15:13

Thanks all. What I mean though is that it goes up and down without Calpol! One hour he’s fine, the next he’s got a temp.

There are 5 main types of fever pattern and sometimes these can be used to identify the illness. Tjere's a bit of unformation about this here:

www.medicinenet.com/what_are_the_5_types_of_fever/article.htm

Onthegrapevine · 11/06/2021 16:06

@Chwaraeteg Thanks. His classified as a “hectic” fever then as his normal is 36.6 and the highest he’s been over the last 24 hours is 38.5. It swings between these all day. I definitely shouldn’t have googled

Onthegrapevine · 11/06/2021 16:12

My bad, it’s probably just an intermittent fever, common with viruses etc.

Sheesh, being a mum is tough.
