Newborn in car seat?

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 09/06/2021 16:28

Can anyone tell me what the limits are for newborns in car seats? I have a holiday booked when my dc will be 9 weeks and am stressing about the drive. Is it 30 mins still at that age or longer?
I will obvs stop regularly for feeds/nappy changes but I am worried about traffic jams on the motor way and not being able to get them out all the time.
Thanks

Just to clarify, I’m not wanting to be told that I can just leave them in there and crack on, and I know that just because there’s a limit/guidance doesn’t automatically mean it’s safe up till then/they will die after that time, but I’m just looking for advice.

So you asked for advice then told everyone not to give any advice ?? Just google it

No more than 2 hours tops, in a decent infant carrier that gives a good fit for the baby (with enough recline etc) and an adult should be sat next to them to keep an eye on them.

At 9 weeks they can do 2 hours. If your drive is longer than that then I’d plan for a good break where they can get out of the seat for at least 30 minutes every 2 hours. If you’re breastfeeding they probably won’t go much longer than that before needing a feed anyway so it won’t be a separate consideration. I’ve done a few journeys of 2-ish hours with my babies to see family and I don’t personally think anything of it if we hit traffic and it takes us say 2 hours and 10 minutes, especially as slow moving traffic typically wakes up DS so I know he’s fine because I can hear him - is that what you’re asking? Do you have another adult that can sit next to the baby if you’re worried?

2 hours, great! I wasn’t sure when it went up from 30mins. It’s a longer drive than 2 hours but she’ll want feeding and changing anyway so we’ll be stopping at least once.

Oh really!? Get a life. What I meant was I didn’t want people piling on me as if I wanted to just leave dc in there as long as possible. So glad you took the time to respond though Hmm

I think but don’t quote me, that the 30 minutes is just for the first 4 weeks!

I read them saying newborns for half an hour and took that to mean for the first 6 weeks although I live over half an hour from the hospital I had DS in so we broke that pretty quickly.
With my first DD they said to give a chance to stretch out during the stops as it can cause them tummy discomfort to be in that position for a long time. Also if it’a summer you’re travelling in then put them in as few layers as possible as they get very hot in those seats

Up to a couple of hours should be okay, great if an adult can sit next to them too just in case.

Hmmm can’t have a adult sitting in the back really as there are 2 car seats, but I do have a mirror for both as they are rear facing.
Maybe we’ll just stop more frequently if I can’t be in the back.
