Just starting potty training my son at age 2, what do I do in these first few days if I need to pop out can you put a nappy back on? It’s not going well so far (I know that’s normal ) he’s not sat on the potty and holds it in for a couple of hours then wees on the floor. So if I went out he would just wet himself but would it be confusing to pop a nappy on ?

Yes it would be.

I never put nappies back on once we had decided to go for it . If he is not really understanding what he is meant to do are you sure he is ready?

Definitely confusing if you put the nappy back on to go out. You need to be prepared for accidents. Take extra clothes and also a potty out with you in the car. My DS1 trained at about 2.5, wet himself once in the library then never again. Once you think he's ready go for it but don't be tempted to put the nappy back on as he will still just wee in the nappy. Make a big show of new big boy underpants and lots of underpants free time inside and a couple of pottys dotted around the room.Good luck. They all get there in their own time.

Thank you maybe he’s not ready ?? I only tried for a day though which I know is silly, but I had to go out and knew he wouldn’t sit on the potty. He showed some signs like hiding to poo and telling me he’s done a poo. He was sitting on the potty when I bought it a few weeks back but not actually weeing or poo. He won’t even sit on it now. Should I not bother trying yet then?

We stayed home for a few days. Then put a mat in the car seat and took a travel potty and lots of spare shorts/trousers. If we were going to somebody's else's house we put her in training pants to save their floors. We didn't put a nappy back on her once we'd started except at night.

She was like your son and it was a tricky few weeks but she got there. The Summer is the easiest time as they can wear sandals and shorts are easy to change. You can get cheap packs of three jogger-style shorts in supermarkets so you can have a good supply.

Two is perfectly fine age to potty train but you need to commit a week to stay at home and do it. This will apply if you do it not or in 6 months time.
