DD 2.9 waking at night to have a pee

Hello - wondered if anyone could pass on any wise words about this...

DD1 (2.9) has been potty trained for about six weeks, and everything has been going well. Still the odd accident but otherwise clean and dry with very little hassle (lucky us!).

We've left her in pull ups overnight as everything I'd read said that most kids aren't ready to be dry overnight until they are at least 3 and I didn't want to put any pressure on her.

But the last four nights she has woken up at about 2/3 in the morning saying she has had a bad dream. A couple of minutes after waking she will ask to go for a wee wee, then do a massive pee in the loo. It normally takes her about 40 mins to get back to sleep (so exhausting for us). But in the morning her nappy is dry. So (and I'm finally getting to the point here...) I think what is actually waking her up is the need to pee, and clearly she doesn't feel comfortable weeing in her nappy anymore.

So what should we do? I thought about putting a potty in her room, but she really only likes to use the loo nowadays. I'm reluctant to try and take her out of pull ups at night as it is so soon after potty training and I don't want to cause her anxiety / let things slip backwards, but at the same time I don't want to miss the opportunity if she is clearly ready to be dry at night.

Any ideas welcome please!

We take our dd to the loo just before we go to bed, she sort of wakes up but not really and goes straight back to sleep afterwards. I don't think this works for everyone but may be worth a try.

thanks for that My2weegirls - just read your whole thread and it was very interesting. Bit spooky though as not only does your DD1s situation sound exactly the same as mine but I ALSO have a DD2 born just over 10 weeks ago.

Maybe that's part of the problem.

I think if we can get DD1 to do what your DD does and just go for a wee then go back to bed then it will be fine. It's just having to stay up and try to get her asleep again that it the problem.

thanks again

that is spooky! if it helps it does get better, we even get some nights now where she goes from 7.30pm till 6am (not many but some ).

because we had so many sleep problems with her we just couldn't face the getting her up to pee at 11ish or thereabouts, now she comes into our room says 'i need to pee' does her pee and goes straight back to bed. before we had screaming matches and read to me/i'm thristy/got sore head/tummy/hungry and every other excuse you can think of. so perservere with getting her to go back on her own - it's hard the first few nights but worth it now - we now say 'night night, love you, see you in the morning'.

good luck

ps we still have to read her to sleep at bedtime though....

In these circumstances I would try lifting her before I go to bed. What are you doing during the 40 mins? My DD was dry at night about a month after potty training at just 2 so it is possible. Obviously not every time - DS was 3 1/2.
