Baby's first food

My son is 6 months at the weekend so we are going to give him some food.

We're not sure whether to do blw or use puree but I think we'll do a bit of both.

What should we give as a first food?

They say do a different single veg every day for a week but I'm not sure how necessary that is. I got board and just started giving a mix of things.
Purées are good as they actually eat them! Blw is ok but it's more about them learning coordination rather than actually filling their tums!
Natural yog is a good one to try in the early days, or mash potato, mushed up swede and carrot. But whatever you do, do a mixture as you say. I found weaning really fun. Hope you do too!

We done single Vegs for the first few times, then once he had tasted everything we started combing them.
We done just purées at first as I wanted him to learn swallowing, get used to tastes etc, I introduced finger foods when I felt he was confident enough and done both from then.

I found it all a mine field at the start but I started to enjoy it!

He’ll pull faces and you’ll think he doesn’t like it but it’s just him tasting something new. Really cute to watch 😂

Oh I loved the gurning faces during first food time! My DS loved mashed potatoes with cheese (still does) and anything involving mashed carrots. Have fun with it and, if nobody has already warned you, beware the mashed banana, it stains clothes like a bugger!

We've just started over the last week. I also couldn't decide between BLW and purees. I started out with both - e.g. sweet potato puree with a stick of roasted sweet potato on the side. I found the stick a bit of a waste - DD found it hard to hold onto it properly, had a couple of little sucks then dropped it on the floor. Not sure I have the patience for all that! I let her feed herself with the spoon though - I load it up then give it to her and she's pretty good at getting it in her mouth. That way she can control what she has. Once she stops putting the spoon in her mouth I leave it. I'm not too worried about her eating a lot, it's more about having a positive first experience of different tastes and textures I think. She's having pretty much the same amount of milk as usual.

I have been using a book called "Feeding Your Baby" for guidance - not following the meal plans to the letter but have found it useful.

Watch out for the change in bowel habits! My DD has gone from multiple poos a day to one big (gross!) one every three days.

  • just checked, the book is called Feeding Your Baby Day by Day by Fiona Wilcock

My first was weaned on the spoon mainly and my second is weaned on finger foods. Both have pros and cons I'd say so a mixture of both is probably the best bet. For example I will give the baby a bit of what I've made DD1 such as toast, cracker, rice cake and feed him cereal off the spoon. Seems to be working well and he is having more than the 3 bottles it says on the formula box. Tbh I tried them both on lovingly made veg and they both rejected it but hey ho

My children just ate what we did by mix of finger food and spoon food.

Their first meals were:

Daughter: roast beef and yorkshire pudding as finger food and mashed potato and gravy as spoon food

Son: apple, cucumber, toast as finger food and some soup as spoon food.

We never did purees or special baby food. Just watch out for salt and avoid whole nuts, honey and raw shellfish and go for it.

I did about a week and a half of bitter veg (asparagus, broccoli, courgette, avocado, etc) and have now moved on to basically just giving him whatever we eat (minus the obvious nos). He got bored of veggies pretty quickly and is enjoying more interesting food now.

Dd was BLW and her first ‘meal’ was chopped strawberries and greek yogurt she massaged into her hair.

She then had roast lamb, potatoes and green beans for dinner because that’s what I was having. And it continued on like that.
