Formula milk

I have an 8 week old has been on formula milk since birth, he started on SMA and then he started to get constipated and being sick each feed. I then switch to Aptamil which is great but now seem to be very windy mainly bottom end, but also seems to be awake all the time each feed. He will feed every 4 hours but is so wild a wake I can't get any time to do anything.

Has anyone else had this with aptamil where windy and is so awake most of the day and night?

Is Cow and Gate any better - less windy and make him sleepy?

What's he doing when he's awake @SteakChips?

SteakChips · 08/06/2021 07:38

@BunnyRuddington Crying, or just fidgeting. I will put him down on his mat but that last for 10min and start crying - I leave him to sooth but then wants to be held.

How long has he been on the new milk for?
It sometimes takes awhile for their tummy’s to settle to it.
How many oz is he taking? Does he need to move up an oz?
Regarding the wind, how many times are winding?
My LO was very windy and I wind afew times during a feed and also for awhile after so he didn’t get any pains

Crying, or just fidgeting. I will put him down on his mat but that last for 10min and start crying - I leave him to sooth but then wants to be held. Some babies do just like being held. I couldn't put either of mine down really at that age and ended up buying a sling.

Bamoon · 08/06/2021 07:46

Because formula is so tightly regulated, they are very very similar. There are some slight differences in the binding ingredients, but if you have tried different ones it's more likely to be something else. As PP said, some babies do just like being held and get upset when put down and won't sleep.

SteakChips · 08/06/2021 10:16

@Moonshine11 about a month now, so it's well truly in his system.

He might just want to be held

SteakChips · 08/06/2021 10:21

@Moonshine11 he has just moved up to 180 and seems happy with that. The wind will start an hour after the feed and it's so loud. I wind him mid feed or after depends when he has finished and do this for 10min. Even bought DR Browns bottles to help as well.

@BunnyRuddington @Bamoon he loves being held and I can settle him but it's putting down when he wakes, I've tried the sling as well and he isn't keen on it unless walking or DH is wearing it.

You could try comfort milk for the wind although that might warrant a conversation with HV or GP first. All stage 1 formulas are much of a much due to the regulations so I wouldn’t expect changing to a different brand to do anything. Or he might just be a Velcro baby, some are!

BlueDucky · 08/06/2021 10:42

it's putting down when he wakes he will get past this in time. Some babies just want to be held. It is a bit annoying when it stops you doing things when they are asleep but they do grow out of it eventually

Moonshine11 · 08/06/2021 10:46

Yes should be well in his system now.
I would maybe wind in the middle of his bottle and at the end.
I also used to gripe to help with wind pains.
My LO was hard to put down sometimes he loved a cuddle, I waited 20 mins till he was in a deep and put down ridiculously slow so he didn’t ‘feel a drop’ into the basket

All sounds very normal! Babies are quite farty! (Mum of 9 here). Even at nearly 7 months old my youngest doesn't like being down for very long! It's a full time job looking after a baby! I wouldn't expect a baby of 8 weeks to self soothe...in fact that whole idea is a bit of a nonsense imo!

BunnyRuddington · 08/06/2021 16:06

You could try adding Dentinox to the bottle, and as others have said, paced feeding and feeding to cue should help.

Really though, a lot of this is normal behaviour for an 8 week baby. Have a read up on the fourth trimester Thanks

In my personal experience Aptamil made my baby sooooo windy! I changed to HIPP organic and it was so much better. She's now on Kendamil and it really suits her
