Moving toddler into higher than normal single bed from cot bed

My 22 month old is about to start the transition from his cot bed to his big boy single bed. We currently have a bed guard on the toddler bed. It's not an option to buy a lower bed and he needs to move into the new bed before the arrival of the new baby ideally, so he is comfy in his new room before baby arrives.

The single bed is higher than a normal bed ( he can't climb in to it himself but he's pretty good now at lowering himself off it). It's not a midsleeper or anything but one of those with storage drawers underneath. Should I get a little set of steps for him to climb in himself or is this unsafe?

Any tips for making this transition as smooth and safe as possible? He generally doesn't try to get out of the cot bed at night time so I'm hoping for the same in the single bed. Will be keeping the video monitor for the foreseeable.

My toddler is the same age and I think it’s early to move into a bed. Can you get another travel cot to use for another 6-12 months?

@FudgeSundae if I could stretch the cot bed longer I would, but he's maxed out on the length now too Sad

My 2.5yo falls out (rolls out) of his bed quite often, more often with his new single bed than he did with the cot bed. He carries on sleeping on the floor Hmm but I'd worry about him falling onto steps.

Can you have the mattress on the floor for a bit?

Get a bed guard
The one we’ve got has legs that sit under the mattress, and it runs most of the length of the bed, so DS can still climb in and out if he needs the potty in the night etc
