Baby vomiting once a day

Hi all

My baby girl will be 9 weeks old tomorrow and since last Monday has been sick once a day in the late afternoon or evening. The first time it was proper projectile vomit, the last few times it's been less projectile but still a significant amount. Last night and the night before it happened at exactly 7pm - weird! She does hiccup a lot after feeds and sometimes has a bit of milky dribble - could it be reflux?

She is formula fed and has a mix of ready-to-feed (Aptamil or C&G) and powder (SMA). Maybe mixing brands isn't helping?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Is it after a big feed? My daughter went through a stage of doing this, about 9-11 months. She was gobbling down her bedtime feed so I made it bigger. Took me a while to realise her body just couldn’t cope with that volume of liquid! We reduced the amount a bit and it stopped.

Worth a quick chat to your HV/GP I’d say, but probably nothing to worry about.

Oh sorry misread, I thought you said 9 months not 9 weeks. Still, just check with you HV or someone tomorrow I think.

What teat size are you using? DS did this and we fixed it but reducing the teat size on his bottle to slow down the flow.

9 weeks is still very little! Her stomach is still maturing, and it's normal for babies to be sick, often after feeds. If you bottle feed I would just make sure you have the right size flow teat and are paced feeding. If you're breast feeding just carry on feeding on demand.

Wouldn't say it's anything to worry about. Most tiny babies puke milk a bit. She has probably just overfed a little.

Ahhh I switched her to medium teats last week so that might be it! She was taking longer to finish a feed on slow flow that's why I switched but I will try going back to slow and see if that helps...

I'd maybe go back to slow just for a short while and see how she goes. It can also help to try and burp them before a feed, but obviously if you are concerned best to speak to your HV.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 06/06/2021 09:58

She's quite young to go up to medium flow so yeah, I'd take it back to slow and pace your feeding. But a milky puke that doesn't trouble a baby is absolutely nothing to worry about. Most of them do it and it always looks like more than it is.

Thank you. I'll try the slow flow teats and see how she gets on

So I had some success with the slow flow teats (no vomiting for several days) but in the last few days she has started vomiting once a day again. Could I be overfeeding her by misinterpreting her "full" signals? She was weighed last week and is on the 75th centile for weight which she was at birth so she's following a steady growth pattern. I'm a bit worried about the long term impact of overfeeding? I'm being really careful today and not rushing to feed when she cries...
