6 week old gulping air and then coughing/gasping for breath

Hi everyone, just wondering if we could ask if anyone’s experiencing this -

Tonight our 6 week old started gulping/swallowing in air while sleeping. She then struggles to catch her breath for about 5 secs, then starts choking, gasping for breath and coughing. This pattern then repeats, often several times (up to 10) in a row. When she goes into a deeper sleep the gulping seems to stop.

She also seems to take in air while breastfeeding and has a lot of gas. Tonight she also vomited up a lot of milk (not Just spit up, more forceful regurgitation).

We’ve googled it and seems to suggest reflux... has anyone experienced this?

Thanks Smile

Any kind of breathing difficulties in a newborn should be treated as an emergency.

It might be reflux, but what if it’s not?

I also think you should treat the breathing issue as serious, just in case.

The vomiting may be linked or may be separate.

Phone 111 now and get an appointment.

Mine did it with Reflux & it used to scare the hell out of me. Please get little one checked though to be sure. I didn't sleep for weeks until my boy was diagnosed with it.

Reflux but agree with the above , get a medical diagnosis

We had this with dd at the same age. It wasn't reflux and we wasted loads of time and energy treating it as such. We ended up in hospital where they diagnosed floppy larynx. Laying on her back caused her problems with breathing (she would often wake herself up struggling to breath) but she was OK when upright. She was also a noisy feeder which is another symptom. Many HCPs missed it.

I have experience of this. Does she have a croup like cough? Is her chest working hard to breathe? Does she have stridor?
