i have a lot of serious food allergies (nuts mainly) but this includes things i’d like my baby to be able to eat like eggs and bananas. if i’m breastfeeding can i give her these things or does breast milk pass these on temporarily? don’t know if that’s a ridiculous question.

I think you should contact your doctor to ask them/ do you see anyone in hospital to manage them?

I'm not sure I understand the breast milk question because you wouldn't be eating them so they wouldn't go into breast milk.

Depending on how severe OPs allergies are, it could be that touching someone who has had contact with the allergen causes a reaction.

Or does OP mean she has passed on her allergies to the baby? I don't know.

Personally, I'd go to the GP. But if there was a chance a food would kill me, I wouldn't feed it to my baby

I’m guessing OP means does her breast milk pass on her allergies to the baby?
Your allergies won’t pass on to your baby though milk but as allergies can have strong family links, your baby is more likely to be allergic than a baby of a non allergic parent. I would certainly introduce my baby to those foods but I would observe carefully for allergic response.

I’d get some medical advice. Your breast milk won’t cause your baby to react to the things you are allergic to - which is what I think you’re asking. Unfortunately, if you have allergies your baby is more likely to have allergies too even if you formula fed. It’s not a certainty, just higher odds than a child with no family history of allergies. It would be the same if it were your baby’s father who had allergies.

thanks all! basically asking as i asked my health visitor the same sort of thing and she said avoid giving baby anything that i’m allergic to while breastfeeding as they might react? but she said she didn’t really know and was just saying that to be cautious so i don’t want to limit her for no reason

Bm won’t make your baby temporarily allergic to something. But if you have sever allergies you should speak to a paediatric dietitian before weaning.

You should discuss this with a specialist. A friend with a nut allergy was told her breastfeeding baby should not have nuts, as his saliva would get on to her boob while feeding and that would be enough to trigger a reaction.

Allergies can also run in families, so it’s more likely your child could have reactions to those allergens.
