6 month old only happy when eating

I've just posted a similar thread about my 6mo DS who is always crying. It's making me miserable, and the only time he is happy is when he is drinking milk (bottle) or solids. And even this is short lived as he screams when it finishes!

I don't think it's hunger as he eats soo much. Has anyone else experienced this? He cries pretty much all the time outside of meals. He can be distracted and needs a change of scene all the time but he's so quick to be incredibly distraught.

I just want to know if this is normal! I'm totally panicking that something is seriously wrong with him.

If he’s only happy when he’s eating or being distracted there might be discomfort somewhere. It’s enough reason to take him to the GP

I agree with above

He might have silent reflux, so he’s experiencing a burning sensation and the only time he can’t feel that is when he’s eating or drinking.

I would suspect reflux; eating and drinking will make it feel better but only for a short period of time. Push the GP about it to prescribe infant gaviscon or similar amd see if it helps.

@Hsjdb7483939 @partyatthepalace @Moonshine11 @MooseBeTimeForSummer Thanks so much all, he does spit up a lot after feeding so it could well be reflux. The only thing is it doesn't seem to be discomfort - I can usually sense the reason (boredom/his bottle has come to an end/his dummy fell out/he's frustrated on his tummy) it's just that the 'reason' is always so minor! He get so upset so quickly and it's all the time. If I get 15 mins without him crying I feel like that's a huge win :-S

Will defo take him to the GP and try Gaviscon.

Is he sleeping enough?

My general rule is - if he isn't hungry and is grumbly or clingy, he's tired.

Lmama · 03/06/2021 18:46

@FATEdestiny that's the saving grace - he sleeps really well (thank god, I'd be on my knees if he didn't!)

I wish it was even grumbly, it's so full on. He wasn't like this until around 4 months so I don't know what's changed :(

Sounds exactly like my DD! It got better once she learned to crawl - a lot of it is frustration.

KangarooSally · 03/06/2021 22:16

It could be that the minor reason you see for why he cries (losing dummy etc) is the straw on the camels back on top of the discomfort or pain he has. Definitely worth seeing a GP

Lmama · 03/06/2021 22:31

@Vicky1989x I'm so sorry you had the same but selfishly it feels so reassuring to know I'm not alone! @KangarooSally you're right - we've started on the infant Gaviscon tonight so fingers crossed. Thank you both
