Cloth nappies in the summer

Just wondering how people go about putting their babies in cloth nappies in the hot weather. I use cloth nappies but I feel that they must be incredibly hot in the summer due to the amount of fabric so I use disposables on hot days. Thanks!

I felt they were a bit more breathable if anything

Disposables are all a bit plasticky and sweaty

I also preferred washables in the summer as I could get them dried quickly on the line

Over winter I was close to giving up with the amount hanging around the house trying to dry

Unless you're using two partners with a wrap I think cloth is more breathable than a plasticy disposable. We've always used cloth and never noticed any sweatiness on hot days - even when it was 40c a couple of years ago.

Plus you can see how cute the prints are when they're in nothing but a nappy!

Have 2 in muslins and a wrap - definitely more comfy than a disposable. Think of it this way - would you rather wear cotton underwear or disposable one? Neither of mine are uncomfortable but then I am happy to have them in short vest and the nappy only if it gets over 30 (I did this all last summer).

Surely summer is the time to get out the fancy patterned wraps?

I had no problems during the heatwave last year. It seems a shame to return to disposables. As a previous poster said, my nappies are drying in record time atm. Smile

I think they’re better in the summer - more breathable, and more moisture wicking. You could always leave off a different layer (like stick to a vest with no top) if you think your baby is getting too warm, but I’ve never had an issue.

Disposable nappies are plastic so although they're physically less bulky, they're still hot and sweaty to wear. I know I would rather wear cotton pants in summer, than plastic ones, even if the cotton ones are thicker.

Agree with others, they would be much more comfortable than sweaty plastic.

We used cloth nappies with our baby while leaving in a hot tropical climate - i much preferred this to plastic-y disposables. Although we often just kept him in a vest onesie.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that they're so much easier to dry out on the line! I think the reason I'm unsure is because I use washable sanitary pads and I find them incredibly hot in the summer compared with disposables so I assumed it would be the same with nappies. Thanks for the info though xx

When our eldest DS was still in night nappies and we tried disposables away on holiday he complained that they were hot and sticky and said "proper nappies" were much more comfortable to wear. That is from the child's mouth and seemed to me to be pretty convincing.

I used to use a terry square no wrap on very hot days outside, infinitely cooler as it evaporates and cools further. .

Himawarigirl · 02/06/2021 17:23

I’ve used them in summer with all three of mine and never felt they were too hot. And they are much cuter to look at if the baby just wants to run around in the nappy. I never saw heatrash or the like.
