DD has a UTI and high fever... advice?

Hi, so this morning my 5 year old DD ended up in A&E with a water infection, a fever and confusion, we were sent home with antibiotics.

Since coming home she seems to have gotten worse? Temperature is staying around 38°c after having calpol and ibrufen, she has now got extremely bad diarrhea, she is complaining of ear ache, her throat is sore (looks white where her tonsils used to be but she also had it checked at A&E and it seemed fine) and her legs are really hurting, could these symptoms be connected? I'm not sure whether to take her back to A&E or if I'm just worrying too much!

Thank you for reading x

They’re normally happy to hear from concerned parents again if symptoms worsen. Give them a call.

Do you have any discharge notes with a number to ring? Was it paeds a and e or a ward? You can usually ring them direct.

Or ring a and e if you can where she was admitted.

Failing that ring 111. She has got worse and you are concerned so follow your instincts. Best ask medical advice rather than assume.

Hope she improves soon poor mite. Sounds awful Sad

If you are worried I would just go back. Hope she is ok.

Trust your instincts and go back - hope all is ok

The diarrhoea could be secondary to the antibiotics if she has started taking them. If you think her condition has worsened then you would be justified in seeking further medical advice. You are her mum so you know her better than anyone. Most medical professionals will tell you that they would rather see your child a hundred times to reassure you than have to tell you just once that you should have brought her in sooner!!! Hope she feels better soonxxx

Absolutely take her back, you know her best

Sally7645 · 01/06/2021 19:12

Take her back now, don't hang around seeing if things improve, take her back and don't leave until you are confident she is ok... which she will absolutely be, but you cant be too careful with this stuff x

Dalmationcoat · 01/06/2021 19:14

Take her back definitely

AddisonMontgomeryShepherd · 01/06/2021 19:15

Agree with pp that some antibiotics can cause diarrhoea so that might be the cause of that, but you know her best & if you are concerned go back. I'm sure they would be happy enough to see you again if her symptoms are worsening. I always think you can't be too careful with kids. Hope she feels better soon.

misskick · 01/06/2021 19:19

Definitely go back. my son many years ago had a reaction to antibiotics. It could be that.

FloconDeNeige · 01/06/2021 19:21

I would take her back. I had a UTI that spread to the kidneys and needed admission (only overnight until it was under control). At age 5 she can’t fully express how her symptoms have changed and thus I’d err on the side of caution.

Fruityfriday · 01/06/2021 19:22

It sounds like the infection poor little thing. I would call 111 for their advise. Pop her in bed with you tonight so.you can keep an eye on her.

TokyoSushi · 01/06/2021 19:23

Oh goodness, yes I'd go back or at least seek advice, hope she's much better very soon

Cleverpolly3 · 01/06/2021 19:29

You should have kangaroo care with the hospital
Could be bad reaction to antibiotics and she needs a different kind
She might need an iv and fluids

Go back. I would in this scenario

Hope all is ok soon

Aquamarine1029 · 01/06/2021 19:32

I would be taking her straight back.

RosiePosiesmama · 01/06/2021 19:45

Thank you everyone! I rang them and they said it will all be connected to the infection because she only started the antibiotics today, I'll be going to bed with her in a minute to keep an eye on her and taking her straight back in if she gets any worse xx
