How high is too high for a fever?

15 month old has caught something (had covid test this morning - awaiting results) and is alternating between normal-ish and then feverish. Today was day 2, he went to bed with a normal temp and 1 hour later it was 39.7!! I gave him Calpol and 30 min later it’s down to 38.6.

At what point do I need to do something different? I’m really worried. He’s ok otherwise, obviously under the weather but nothing screaming out at as being terribly wrong.

Unless it goes to 41 the height of the fever doesn’t really matter. It feels alarming but it doesn’t make a difference

@Mrbob Thanks. So 41 is the number then. At which point I assume A&E? Information online is so conflicting.

My ds regularly got high temps of 39.9/40 when he was younger, we took him to a&e when medicine didn't bring it down and he became hard to rouse, floppy etc. on the advice of 111.

9/10 it was manageable at home.

Hope your little one feels better soon.
