What is your 14mo daily routine for naps?

Hi everyone. My 14mo has started resisting his afternoon nap - takes about 20-30mins to get him down for a 45min nap. His daily routine for sleep looks like this -

0530 - wake up
0900 - morning nap for abput 1.5hrs
1400 - afternoon nap for about 45mins
1900 - bed

I know that wake up is early, but we've tried everything and ive come to the conclusion he's just an early riser. I was wondering when everyone transitioned their LOs to one nap a day? Im in two minds for my son. One the one hand his days are 14hrs long because of his early wake up, so he probably does need his 2 naps a day. On the other hand he's become a PITA to get down for his second nap, which is making me think he doesnt want it?

What are everyone elses experiences? Thoughts?

I should add he sleeps through the night until he wakes at 5.30, and isnt usually to much of a pain to get down for the night.

My DD is a bit younger (almost 13 months) but we usually do something like this:-

6:30: wake up
9:30: morning nap for 1.5 hours (wake by 11 if not already)
2:30: afternoon nap for 1.5 hours (wake by 4)
7:30: bed

Although lately she’s been waking up between 7-7:30 so I’ve adjusted it slightly, putting her down at 10 and waking by 11.

Have you tried waking him a bit earlier from his morning nap to see if he settles for his afternoon nap better?

14 month DS:
05:45-6:30 wake up (quite a range but always goes up sleep at 19:30)
12:30 nap at nursery, 13:00 if at home. Generally has 2.5 hours sometimes more sometimes less.

He's ill at the moment so has been having an extra 30 mins in the pram in the morning of we're out, sometimes as late as 11:30 but it hasn't effected the afternoon nap at all so I figure he just needs the extra great rest at the moment.

A friend's little one had a similar routine to yours and saw a sleep consultant who advised trying to cap the morning nap at 30 mins. My attitude is that if it's working for you, who cares when the longer nap is but at this age they're probably not going to want 2 longer naps a day.

13 month DD started resisting her afternoon nap before she was 12 months 🙄 now she has one nap
wake up around 0630/0700
nap 1130/1200 for 2 hours
bedtime at 1830
it took a bout a month to transition fully to one nap, some days she still needed two but she sleeps so much better at night now ( usually one wake up for a feed) and our routine is pretty solid.

i will add i had a 5am waker with my older DD ( now 3) for over 2 years - she was much later to transition to 2 naps as she just couldn't do such a long day. i used to let her sleep early ( like 0830/0900 for 45 min max) snd then she would have maybe an hour in the afternoon until she was 15/16 months and transitioned to one longer afternoon nap. sadly made no difference to the 5 wake up call! even at 3 and a half she still wakes up no later than 6am , sigh!

By 14 months my DD had a long nap around 1.5-2 hours at 10.30- 11ish then a shorter one around 3.30/4pm for 30 to 45 mins. She was up around 6.30 in am. She transitioned to 1 big nap by 16 months. She is now19 months and sleeps 2 hours from around 1.30-3.30 in house. At nursery its usually 1h to 1.5hours.a bit earlier in day, occasionally 2. At mils its around 2 hours but can vary. Shes up around 7 (i have to wake her up to go to work :( )or 7.30 at weekend.

I noticed her morning nap was becoming later so eventually i stopped the pm nap and eventually put her down after lunch instead of before.

I try not to let her go over 2hours now or it affects night time but she shows no sign of reducing it. I was always nervous to change anything that worked but she sort of did it herself. And nursery helped. She would skip her am nap then her pm one became the only one.

My DS is 15 months and I started transitioning him to one nap around 14 months as he was resisting that second nap. I moved his morning nap to a bit later while reducing his afternoon nap

Allthegranola · 30/05/2021 16:11

Mine is 16 months, so a bit older but she's had the same routine for a while.

8am wake-up
12.30 -2.30 nap
7pm bed.

She is a naturally good sleeper though. Her big sister was a nightmare until she was 3!

Yennefer19 · 30/05/2021 18:58

Is your little one walking yet? My little one started resisting all naps at that age so it was just a case of her napping as and when she wanted. However she started walking around 18 months and then she would nap everyday for about 2 hours once a day.

To be honest I’m a big believer in just letting my DD let me know what she wanted to do with naps, if your little one goes without the second nap and is fine then I would be happy with them going down to one a day, it very much does depend on the individual child, what works for one may not work for another.

Ooh I had just been thinking about this, my DD 14 months this week seems to be on the brink of changing from 2 naps to 1. Currently naps 10.30ish for an hour and half to two hours and again 2.30ish for an hour or so, but morning nap is becoming longer and think it will eventually evolve into a mid day nap on its own... also afternoon naps are now starting to interfere with going to sleep at bedtime if they run on past 4 where before it didn’t seem to matter too much!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 30/05/2021 19:48

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think ill slowly transition him to napping later in the morning, and see what happens. Atm im waking him from his 1st nap so he doesnt sleep past 1030, and thats only so he can fit in his 2nd nap. So I think ill just let him sleep and see where we get.

DS (13 months) is:

7am wake
9.30 nap
11.30am wake
3pm nap
3.30pm wake
7pm bed

Sometimes he will skip the afternoon nap but does get very overtired by bedtime. So I think he still needs that quick nap.

Findahouse21 · 30/05/2021 20:09

From 6 months:
Wake - 7:30
Nap 12:30 - 3
Sleep 7:30
Doesn't sleep through the night though

Once I moved her to 1 nap, I had to fight it less and the quality of her daytime sleep and therefore mood improved massively

14 month old:

Two schedules depending..

One:

Wakes 5.15am 😭 (it was 7am but the last month has been dreadful)
Nap: 9.30am for 2 or 3 hours
Bed 7pm

^^ if DD has two hours or more, she doesn’t need another nap. Bedtime is easy.

Two:

Wake 5.15am
Nap: 9.30 for under 2 hours
Afternoon nap: 2.30-3pm
Bed: Aim for 7pm, often ends up being 8pm

^^ afternoon nap kills bedtime for us 🙈 I try avoid afternoon naps at all costs!

At nursery, DD now has a 12pm nap like the toddlers. I’ve no idea how they keep her awake & happy until then!
