111, minor injuries, A&E?

Please don't be mean. DD was being supervised by 3 adults when this happened.

DD (2) fell backwards off a climbing frame this morning. She didnt fall very fast as the ladder broke her fall a bit but she did flip over and landed on her front.

Climbing frame is about a meter / meter and a half off the ground.

She cried immediately and there wasn't a scratch on her.

She was fine once she stopped crying and ate lunch and played normally.

She went out scooting with daddy and DS this afternoon and all was well.

Suddenly in the park she stopped kicking the football and sat down crying. Daddy noticed a blister from some new shoes so assumed it was that.

Since she got home she's refused to put any weight on her feet. She's said both her foot and knee hurts. She's been upset and sad and made these horrible little squeaks when picked up. She's never made a sound like that.

We really don't know if it's the fall or the blister that is hurting her so much.

What do we do? It seems a lot for a blister but what if she did hurt herself from the fall?

Keep an eye tonight, minor injuries tomorrow if she’s the same

ThatsNotMyReindeer · 29/05/2021 19:05

Calpol, rest, see how she is in the morning if she were one of mine

zaffa · 29/05/2021 19:05

I would go to a and e - just to be on the safe side. I was tempted to go after DD rolled off the bed (but the doctor talked me down) so I would absolutely go even if she wasn't displaying signs of distress

Blisters do hurt like a bugger even if you are an adult. Is there any sign of swelling or discolouration on her knee/leg?

bubblebath62636 · 29/05/2021 19:05

No judgement op, accidents happen!

I'd try and get her seen asap at minor injuries unit, just to be safe.

zaffa · 29/05/2021 19:06

I read somewhere that children should be seen if the height they fall from is higher than they are tall and they hit their head.

Einszwei · 29/05/2021 19:09

Is there any visable sign of injury? Keep her rested tonight, and see how she feels in the morning.

Lsquiggles · 29/05/2021 19:09

I'd call 111 just to be sure. Not sure going straight to A&E is the right call here as you may be waiting ages for nothing, 111 will be able to assess whether her symptoms are worrying or not

UnalliterativeGeorge · 29/05/2021 19:10

If she's not weight bearing at all I'd go to A&E. DS did similar off a slide and had broken a leg.

luxurychocolate · 29/05/2021 19:15

I'd say the fact dc won't weight bear is the hint but you could leave it over night.

My dc similar age, small trip. Seemed ok but wouldn't weight bear on right leg the next morning. Went to A&E and it was broken...

alexdgr8 · 29/05/2021 19:16

i'd take her straight to A&E.
don't quite understand how she fell. if she fell backwards, how did she land on her front. she didn't somersault backwards did she.
what part of her body actually struck the ground.
go hosp before the drunks come in. good luck.

Twizbe · 29/05/2021 19:17

She has a bruise about half way down the leg.

She has let me feel the legs and they don't feel swollen or anything. She was also scooting this afternoon with no issues.

She's been sat either crossed legged or with her knees up. She's refusing to straighten either leg.

My god my heart stopped when she felt. She knows that climbing frame so well as it's in her grandparents garden. She's really confident on it as well. Why did we let her climb up alone? She landed on quite a mossy patch of grass.

Have you tried putting a plaster on her blister? I know it won't actually help but in the mind of a 2 year old it could make a difference
.
I would call 111 because there are too many factors at play to rule out anything

Twizbe · 29/05/2021 19:18

She was climbing up the ladder and she fell bum first and sort of slowly flipped over. I'm not sure if one foot got stuck in the ladder. It all happened so fast. I could see she wobbled at the top but I just couldn't get there before she fell

I'm getting some now. I was going to try to leave it open to the air tonight but that might be a good idea

If anything was broken, I doubt she'd be able to go scooting after the fall. One of my DC tripped over something when they were almost 2, knew straight away they were injured as bruising and swelling appeared, and they were clearly in a of pain. The drs at a&e were quite shocked to see a spiral fracture in DCs leg, when we all thought the ankle was the problem.

She might have bruising or discomfort. If you can touch all up both her legs without her being upset or in pain, I'd see how she is in a couple of hours

juicey09 · 29/05/2021 19:24

Although it's totally normal to be worried and anxious!! Especially at 2 when they can't verbalise properly what the problem is!

It's horrible. She's a quite advanced talker so at least she has been able to say what hurts and what doesn't. She's also been talking about falling of the climbing frame.

She's been in the wars a lot recently. She fell off her scooter a few time yesterday. She's been stung by nettles as well recently.

I remember dd having a blister when she was 3 or 4, we had walked quite far to the beach in her new shoes, she refused to walk, cried like her leg was hanging off so I took her to the first aid station on the beach where a old guy washed her blister with water 😬, she screamed even more. I had to kick her baby sister out the pushchair, put dd2 in and carry her sister whilst trying to push Dd1 back to the car which was a mile away. She then spent 3 days refusing to walk.

bloodywhitecat · 29/05/2021 19:58

Get her seen, my two year old was using her broken arm for 10 days before it was diagnosed. We could touch it and she could turn her hand from palm up to palm down, she was using it to climb trees but it was still broken. I did take her earlier but due to covid A&E physically examined her without x-raying her and she passed their 'checks' but an x-ray later showed a break that was starting to heal.

Wakeupin2022 · 29/05/2021 20:03

If she is still not weight bearing then it's probably time to do something.

It's hard at times to know when they are genuinely hurt or they have the tiniest scratch that means they 'can no longer walks.

Might be too late for minor injuries if an xray is needed. 111 will just tell you to go to minor injuries / A&E so I wouldn't bother.

You know her better than anything so if your worried follow your gut.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 29/05/2021 20:04

I’d go to A&E or at the very list call 111, she is 2 and still a tolddler.

BadgerWatch · 29/05/2021 20:19

If you're considering Minor Injuries and it's a separate hospital to A&E check their policy on x-raying children. Mine would just send you straight elsewhere as we don't x-ray under 7's.

Little update.

She went to bed ok last night. Still refused to walk and seemed down. She fell out of her bed and I found her half in, half out. Thankfully her bed is very low to the ground. Not quite a floor bed but almost.

Anyway, I decided to sleep on the floor next to her to keep an eye on her.

She's woken this morning back to her old self. She started walking and then running and it seems the blister was the main problem yesterday and that's why she was refusing to walk.

She's currently eating Pom bears, drinking a baby chino and telling her brother off for touching her drink.

She's honestly been so accident prone recently. I don't remember by eldest being like this.
