5 month olds eyes

Hi everyone

Not sure whether I'm being over the top here but my 5 month olds eyes seem to go slightly crossed when she is focussing on something close up. She has only just started doing this. She doesn't do it when looking at me or around, but when she looks at her toys or cot mobile, one eye seems to focus in more. Is this normal for her age?

Thanks

I'm not saying it's not normal but I can't say I'd ever noticed this with my 6 month old. If concerned I would say to speak with your HV.

Hopefully some more useful responses will be along soon...

That's useful, thank you. I will speak to them to check just to be safe.

It is normal for babies' pupils to turn until the age of six months as the muscles in the eye are still developing. If one or both pupils are turning (AKA a squint) after six months of age ask your HV for a referral to an orthoptist.

It can be normal, but it is probably worth getting it looked at. Here it's opticians that make the referrals if needed, HVs have nought to do with it (the optician doesn't do an eye test as they would for adults, they look with some of their lights etc).

Thank you. Will speak to the opticians too.

If she’s holding something very close to her face in front of her nose then yes I would say it’s normal for her eyes to cross same way if we held something in the centre of our faces and looked at it our eyes would cross.

Mine did this around the same age and I was convinced she would be cross-eyed! It was short lived and she never does it anymore - 7 months old now and hasn't done it for ages.

Thanks both

I mentioned this to our health visitor last month (baby was around 4 months) and she said it was because she doesnt have a nose bridge yet 🤷‍♀️

Ah ok thank you!
