Advice on poorly toddler

Hi

So my 2 and a half year old toddler for the last couple of months is holding in a poo and won't go to the toilet regularly.

I have been giving laxido and lactulose regularly as advised by the GP and it's averaging that he goes once a week. Well he's not been since Thursday last week so that's 8 days. In between he's only let out skid stains in his nappy.

For the last couple of days he has been very whiney. Difficult to get to go to sleep. Wakes up early whining in the morning and is not eating food - however still managing to eat things like yogurt and chocolate but not actual meals, he's eating the bare minimum.

He doesn't have a temperature. I did notice a little rash which I sent to the GP. The GP said it didn't seem like anything to be concerned about unless it starts to spread, which it hasn't. We have very pale skin and notice every little mark.

Anyway this morning, after having some
Milk and yogurt and completely refusing his porridge he threw up randomly and started crying. He's never done this before. He's now being really needy over me.

We have recently got a puppy and I don't know if he may be having a reaction or something? I feel like I've been so occupied with the puppy that I'm worried ive missed something.

Has anyone got any advice? Could it just be a one off sickness? Could it be because he's feeling pain with not pooing? Allergy to the dog? I really don't know how worried I should be.

I'm waiting for a GP to call.

Anyone with a similar experience or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

He must be in such a lot of pain with constipation. The vomiting could also be severe constipation too.

Is he toilet trained? You mention him not going to the toilet regularly, but also mention nappies. I'd suggest you keep nappies, certainly for poos if it causing this much of a problem. Many toddlers don't like to poo in the toilet or potty even when they are happy to wee in there.

I'd suggest you see the doctor about this. He possibly needs a referral to a dietician, his restrictive diet wont be helping.

He’s probably severely constipated.
I would get an urgent GP appointment or take him to a walk in centre.
Sounds like he might need hospitalisation to be “debunged” and given IV fluids.
Also an appointment with a dietitian might help a reoccurrence. Might he have a dairy intolerance?

Sounds like severe constipation, I think you need to see the doctor. They may prescribe a high dose laxative or he may need to go to hospital. I sympathise, my DD has these problems and she gets very uncomfortable. I once had to give her 8 sachets of Movicol!

So we were referred to a and e and they said to start giving him movicol instead and like you said @lulujuju it could be up to 8 sachets.
The doctor at a and e didn't think the sickness was related to any form of constipation and felt it was just an upset tummy.
It's like constantly fighting a losing battle. I feel useless because I can't do anything about it. 😢

@alixxx1 I completely understand your frustration, it's really hard when you can't help. Glad you got it sorted though, I give a maintenance dose of Movicol now and that helps.

alixxx1 · 28/05/2021 22:26

@lulujuju how long has this been going on for you? X

@alixxx1 about a year now but not all of the time, it was much better for a while when DD was potty trained but now it seems to happen every few months. If it's really bad I give 4 sachets of Movicol and then a maintenance dose for a few days.
