As title says really, i have a 2 month old baby and ever since he was born he wakes up, eats, changes diaper and goes back to sleep... this goes on 24 hours, he rarely has awake time where we can play around with him... is this normal? We dont try to put him back to sleep, he just falls asleep after eating... when he wakes up he is extremely fussy and hungry so there isnt reallt much room to do anything at that time either... is this normal at his age? When do they start being more alert? Shouldnt we be stimulating his brain during “awake time”? Thank you

Hi going on my experience as a mum and now Gran to a 1 year old, I would be expecting an 8 week old to have awake periods between feeds. Do you have anyone in the family to ask or have you spoken to your health visitor or GP?

Horehound · 26/05/2021 22:51

I too would expect awake periods. Speak to your HV or GP.

How long is he awake feeding for?
Was he born prematurely?

Yes I had periods of awake with my very good sleeping babies.

My eldest was like this. In her case it was just her personality, she is still a chilled out child who loves to sleep. I had a shock when Dc2 came along!

I would speak to the health visitor for reassurance though.

Speak to hv. Maybe refer fir check by paediatrician.

At 2 months should be awake long enough to smile at you.

Keep a sleep diary for few days record all times awake asleep feeding pees poos

SleepingStandingUp · 26/05/2021 23:04

When he wakes up, is she "alert" or just sleepy and miserable until he's fed then asleep? Is he eating as much as you'd expect?

Hmm I would speak to your HV or GP just to check.

I have a 2 month old, and his “routine” is a little like this:

7am - wake
Feed and nappy change
8.30 - 11am: nap
Feed and nappy change
12.30 - 2pm: nap
Feed and nappy change, he then seems to wake for a while
4pm ish - 5.30/6: nap
Feed and nappy change/scream the house down
7.30/8pm - sleep 1 if we are lucky, if not - continued screaming. If screaming will usually drop off around 10.
11pm - wake, feed, nappy
Sleep 2
3-4am - wake, feed and nappy
Sleep 3
7am - up for day

We get some time to play with him after his feeds, perhaps 20 minutes or so before he’s needing to sleep again.

Every baby is different and it most definitely doesn’t go like that every day (especially when he screams blue murder of an evening). He also wakes several times through his naps if he isn’t in contact with me/DH. He also doesn’t religiously do 4-5 hours through the night sadly. As often as he does (and those nights are bliss), he has nights where he is up every hour and needs to be held.

Mines the same, so was my first. I asked the doctor with my first and she just laughed and told me to enjoy it while it lasted!

My son 'woke up' at about 3.5 months but would still only be awake for short periods which gradually increased. He's awake all day now so there's no need to worry!

My little girl is 9 weeks and she's starting to have a short awake period in the evening. Once she's hungry I breastfeed her and off she goes again! If she's cuddled up with me she'd sleep the day away I'm sure!

Bluebird76 · 26/05/2021 23:07

I remember worrying about this when my babies were about this age. A month or so later my little nap refusers had me ruing the day I'd ever complained about them sleeping too much. My 4mo DS once managed to stay awake for 9 straight hours...

Opalfeet · 26/05/2021 23:54

I had this, I wouldn't be unduly worried and enjoy the sleepy time whilst it lasts. Soon he'll be very alert and you wish you hadn't worried.

But, really seek advice if you're worried and you feel that things are amiss.

I had this - milk would send baby to sleep and then when he would wake up he'd cry and be hungry again and the cycle would restart. Over time he got more awake and I would also not always let him fall asleep straight after a feed. Do see a doctor if you're worried though.

Having the same worries! What was the outcome OP?
