Baby wakes when delatched

Hi everyone, I have a 7 month old who wakes as soon as I take my nipple out of his mouth. I’m worried that he’s getting too much milk through the extra suckling but also it means my bad back is not getting better as I’m having to lie in an uncomfortable position. He’ll only sleep when breastfed or taken out in buggy. Any tips for how to delatch without making him wake up?

Have you tried lying down when you’re bf? It’s much more comfortable for you, and baby won’t be disturbed when he naturally falls off the nipple, or you can gently use you finger to break the latch (google it if unsure). This position was a godsend with one of mine.

Don’t worry about too much milk! However, if you’re engorged, you can try to express some in between feeds.

Other ways to get baby to sleep are in the sling, or just rocking gently.

Remember it’s a phase, and it will pass. By 8mths you might start to see a difference. Hang in there! X

At 7 months you might not want to start with a dummy. But my oldest I would quickly switch my nipple for the dummy and she was quite happy to keep sleeping as she had something to suck on.

I’ve found sometimes if I press a finger to DDs lips very quickly after delatching she won’t wake, then you can slowly ease your finger away. It doesn’t work every time though.

It was a phase my bf Ds1&2 both went through. I remember the frustration well!

Bf lying down so you don't need to move D's to detach. Be very patient (I often used to do it too quickly).

Slowly remove your breast by pulling it out from the underside of your boob - you should be able to break the suction without a "pop". Sometimes squeezing your boob gently into a point will do the same thing depending on the angle.

Once the suction is broken you can leave your boob/nipple in DS's mouth for a minute or 2 till they're used to that change, then remove boob, then try to move yourself. If you have a blanket you can both lie under to wrap round as you move (to maintain the sense of someone being there) then do that too.

Fingers crossed he grows out of it soon
