Hiya,
My dd is 2, and no matter how tight the belts are on her (normal seat suitable for 2year old), she will fight with it until her arms out out

I am now so sick of stopping every ten minutes to redo it, I need some help!

What can we do?

Thanks

Halfords sell something to stop this. My son got one arm out last week and stressed me out. will look for a link for you.

Kbear · 17/11/2007 14:58

It's a tough one but if she can get her arms out it needs to be tighter and that's all there is to it. If she screams she screams. She's not safe if she can get her arms out.

That sounds harsh now I've typed it! Don't hate me ha ha

I use the clips that you buy in Ikea or Lakeland to keep flour bags etc closed and attach the two bits of strap to it, although I do worry that if he flew forward in an accident it may not be the best solution.

Can't find it on their site but there def is something.

The straps need to be pulled so tight you can only get 2 fingers between them iirc.

jofeb04 · 17/11/2007 15:02

They are as tight as they will physically go!

will look for some type of clip.

How does she get out then?

jofeb04 · 17/11/2007 15:08

I've no idea Nab! DD seems to push her bum forward, so she seems to be sitting down in her chair iyswim, giving more space at the top.

She can also undo the button on it though!

if you find out let me know! DS has started this as well - so far a stern no and tigher straps are working poor boy won't be able to breath in there soon thou! lol.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 17/11/2007 15:10

Maybe you need a new seat. This is very dangerous as I am sure you know. Kids!

Meid · 17/11/2007 15:11

I have exactly the same problem with my DS, who is 22 months. The straps are as tight as possible and he manages to wriggle out. He wriggles out of his high chair and push chair too. The only explanation I've come to is that he puffs out his chest when I'm tightening the straps to create some slack.

I'll have a look in Halfords for a clip that might help.

Thanks for starting the thread, jofebo4.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 17/11/2007 15:15

Tickle him so he can't puff his chest out.

lailasmum · 17/11/2007 15:19

we had this problem and bought a thing called a hug-it which goes around the straps above the buckle and stops them being pulled apart so its a physical impossibility with the hug-it on. I have been looking for their website but it seems to have moved. I will keep looking.

jofeb04 · 17/11/2007 15:19

Going to try tickling dd as well. Think that is similar to dd, wrt puffing chest out.

At the momentt, dd only undoes the clip when she can't get her arms out

my dd did this ( she is now 22 months)
v.dangerous.
Last time she did it i pulled over and REALLY shouted at her. She was very upset and i felt bad for shouting but
She hasnt done it since.

when she gets out of the car i now tell her shes a good girl for keeping her arms in! she seems to like that.

my ds3 started doing this last year and I bought a 'snugsit' from the great little trading company. This worked brilliantly until he turned 2 then managed to pull the velcro strap.

I remember searching through threads on this recently and someone suggested tying a muslin cloth around the straps or using a harness over the top of them and clipping around the back, though I would worry about the damage this could do to the chest/ribs in the event of a crash?

The other thing that has helped has been raising the height of the straps where the headrest is (I hadn't realised I had kept it on the lowest level).

I really sympathise, my children seem to spend so much time being driven around and my ds3 is now unclipping the actual seatbelt! I haven't got an passenger airbag so will be moving his seat to the front. I despair and wish we could live close enough to the school so we could walk.

mrsgboring · 17/11/2007 23:00

Before you tighten straps on the shoulders, make sure you have pulled them in TIGHT to the hips, by the buckle. With my seat the way to do it is pull straight up on the straps hard first, then keeping the tension on the bottom part of the straps, tighten straps using pull cord provided.

I tighten straps harder than anyone else I know!

Oh, and if you do decide to try another seat, if you by any chance have isofix points on your car, make sure you have Isofix seat - you can get a lot more purchase to yank on that cord and tighten it that way, as seat is rock solid.

faith41 · 21/11/2007 20:11

this is on ebay. i bought it but it only owrks if you can completely release the straps on your car seat as it is a sealed unit and you have to thread it through. it doesnt work for britax eclipse. hope this is of use to you
