Helloitsmi · 20/05/2021 12:21

Just starting the diet because my baby has suspected cmpa with breathing problems etc...

I forgot to ask about products that say may contain traces of milk or soy.

Are these ok?

Thanks

No. You need to avoid it all so they can diagnose properly.

Fitforforty · 20/05/2021 14:14

Do you suspect IGE or none IGE? For none IGE a you should wait until your six week being dairy and soy free have pasted and you have challenged them (if you are) and then you can try and see what happens.

@Fitforforty
I honestly don't really understand the ige blood test thing.
They did a blood test in hospital and the specific tests were 0.1 so i understand negative and the overall one less than 1kU.

We have a consultation in 3 weeks to reassess.

Also my baby is 1 month old so they said some tests aren't reliable so young?

Blood tests only work for iGE which is an immediate reaction. If I was you wouldn’t eat foods which are may contain until you speak to the consultant to paediatric dietitian.

My son has a cmpa & I had to stop bfing because I couldn’t tweak my diet enough to stop showing blood in his stool using the fecal occult test. He no longer has blood bc he’s on Alimentum & he’s doing better when it comes to his feedings he’s no longer in pain. But from what the pediatrician told me a lot of babies w cmpa are also allergic to soy. There is a great group on fb called “moms of kids with milk allergy and food allergies” a lot of support there. Best of luck ❤️

My son has cmpa. I removed dairy and soy from my diet, and I don't eat may contains/made in a factory. I'm a coeliac and always followed that rule with gluten as I react to even the smallest amount not cross contamination. The dietitian for my son told me may contains were fine, but the one time I risked it he reacted, so now it's a firm avoid.

I also think he is reacting to egg and chickpeas so will be removing and testing them this next week.

I combi feed (nothing to do with his cmpa, I unfortunately have low supply for various other reasons) and he has formula top ups. He reacted to the hydrolised milk formula they always give first - he is now having Neocate which is an amino acid formula, completely milk free. If that's a route you do end up going down, be firm with the GP about wanting the AA formula because it saves a lot of heartache. I don't know a single baby who settled on the hydrolised ones. Though tbh I wish I could just fully breastfeed because then at least you can totally control it, so if I were you I'd stick with it as best you can!

*amount of cross contamination

FTEngineerM · 20/05/2021 20:54

I’d say no, I was still eating trace amounts unwhittingly most of the time and my DCs skin didn’t clear until I stopped BFing.

8monthsinandcranky · 20/05/2021 21:10

NO CUT IT ALL OUT
-no dairy
-no soy
-no ‘May contain traces of’
-no ‘produced in a factory that also handles....’

NOTHING! The moment you say ‘breathing issues’ it’s clearly more than a suspected intolerance. My DS was suspected IGE as had rashes with it.

You can’t half arse it or try to cut any corners when it’s that serious I’m afraid, although no one would judge you for changing to formula as it’s really really hard going to follow this kind of diet carefully. I did it for 6 months and it sucked.

If you do decide to tough it out here is my personal advice I wish I’d had

  • Oatly Barrister Milk
  • Bagels
  • Pure Spread
  • white rabbit vegan pizza
  • chocolate Bourbon biscuits (most supermarket brands)
  • booja booja ice cream
  • indulgent free from treats especially the Waitrose brand. Expensive but nice - check packaging!

The free from aisles at most supermarkets will massively be your friend.

I would recommend switching to Vegan products because at least you know they will be 100% dairy free and also I found them very tasty especially the Galaxy vegan chocolate! 😋

mamakoukla · 21/05/2021 03:54

From experience, it’s a strict no to any amount no matter how small or trace or may contain. If if helps you all move forward in resolving this, it will be worth the initial effort. Best wishes xxx

Vegan products can still contain traces of milk from other production lines in the factory.
MrsW150917 · 21/05/2021 08:47

Yeah I know they warn on the packaging that they're made in same factory which uses milk but Health visitor recommended I switch to vegan.
Poor girl will have nothing to eat lol
I found it very difficult as it is. My LO on formula now anyway and he's lactose intolerant, not dairy.

OP if you find it too hard just switch to formula, that's what I did. At least LO will be getting fed and there's no risks of any dairy in CMPA formula.

Good luck

Thank you so much everyone for the replies and helpful info!

My DD has skin rashes, lots of watery spit up (not just after feeding), nasal congestion, occasional choking, stridor and belly pains. She had lots of tests done in hospital but i think they cannot confirm the allergy that's why it's suspected.
I am really not trying to half arse it... just not familiar at all with allergies and restricted diets!

On her report it also says i shouldn't eat beef or veal as meat either. Is this normal?

I am not in the UK unfortunately... and so here the free from and vegan options are very limited 😐 but i got what i found...

I love breastfeeding and so would really like to be able to do it for another 5 months if possible. Hoping the diet helps.

Thanks for the formula recommendations. In case we go down that route... took note!

Some babies that are allergic to milk are also allergic to soya or beef but not all so you might be able to reintroduce those once symptoms calm down.

I bf my DS until 14 months, he has milk and soya allergies and I'm allergic to wheat so it was restrictive but doable.
