Shutting DD1 (4.5) and DS2 (1.5) doors at night?

Hi

Basically DS2 is up anywhere from 4.50am - 5.30 am. He’s waking up DD1 (let alone us!) who is then knackered for the school day. We are also absolutely exhausted.

We’ve tried everything, later bed time, black out blinds etc. Only thing left is shutting their doors - thought it might shield DD1 from the noise, and might stop the last bit of daylight getting into DS2s room.

But are they too young for closed doors? DS2 still has a monitor. I guess I’m worried they cough or cry and we don’t hear them, or something like that.

Leaving aside anything else, from a fire safety perspective bedroom doors should always be closed, so finding a way to make that work would be much safer for your family.

I second PP - doors should be shut for fire safety purposes. There's no harm giving it a go.

My kids have always had closed doors (with a monitor when v little).

DS1 has always (since a baby), had his door shut.
DS2 wants light from the landing into his room, so always has it open. He wouldn't like it to be closed once he was asleep either, even though he has fairy lights on and the landing light will be turned off.
It depends on your children. Are they scared of the dark?

I’ve always shut my kids doors at night. We have a small house and I know I’ll disturb them if I move around once they are in bed if their doors were open.

I've always shut the door. May I ask how he's getting to sleep? I only ask as my eldest was an absolute horror for waking at the crack of dawn - or in the middle of the night for a party - at that age and we only cracked it by leaving him to fall asleep by himself at 20 months (before then we'd have to stay in the room with him holding his hand). That was the absolute key for us and he started sleeping in until 7.

My son is 2 and we've always kept his door shut at night, we do still use a monitor mainly because we have a large house and won't hear him from downstairs if he gets out of bed.

Dowermouse · 17/05/2021 07:07

All doors shut and other monitor, one that only kicks in at a certain volume so you don't have to hear every grunt or fart.
Later wake ups will happen eventually, probably!

I never shut doors, their rooms get too hot if I do that. Once asleep ours are dead to the world. When they were little I would keep them with me downstairs until I went to bed so lots of noise, made them solid sleepers.

Mine have only had doors shut when they were babies, but now they both need the landing light on and the doors as open as they'll go! They're 7 and 9 though, not toddlers.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/05/2021 09:54

I've never kept my DC bedroom doors open.

Couldn't you open their window slightly for breeze?
BertieBotts · 17/05/2021 09:55

You are supposed to close their doors in case there is a fire!

If you have a monitor I don't know what the worry is. Surely a 4yo can also walk and open doors if they are really upset about something?

Thanks everyone. Going to try it tonight x
