Hi,
My nearly 4 month old boy spits up an unbelievable amount after most feeds, which turns into a clear liquid after a couple of hours.
He also doesnt poop some days and screams in clear pain which I am assuming is constipation?
I dont know if they're connected but they're the two main symptoms he has.
We cant use infant gaviscon as that deffo did make him constipated.
Could this be a milk allergy or something else?
I worry hes not getting enough food as he is constantly sicking up his milk.

Is he breastfed?

MotherPiglet · 16/05/2021 22:04

Could be reflux. Have you spoken to GP?

That sounds pretty worrying. Have you called your GP?

He was breastfed to start with but I wasn't producing enough sadly so he is bottle fed.
I did speak to my gp and he prescribed gaviscon, which is causing constipation and when ds does go, it's really solid and clearly painful for him. So we have stopped the gaviscon.
Honestly, the gp isnt very helpful...

To be honest, he is the happiest baby I've ever met and doesn't seem to notice or be affected by his spit up but he does have the odd evening where he is inconsolable, which I am assuming is constipation as he doesn't go on them days.

I had the same issue. Some tips the GP recommended me
/ gaviscon (we found LO isn’t constipated as passed wind and just has firmer poops which are a struggle sometimes but not “rabbit droppings” like constipation)

  • keep upright for 20/30 mins after feed
  • cut bottle size down (eg. From 7oz to 6oz) and give smaller amounts and more often
  • during feeds let baby have 1-2oz at a time, wind, repeat
  • when the time comes, try weaning

I hope this helps! Our LO still is sick now & then but nowhere near what he was! Seems much more comfortable during feeds and actually didn’t cry for more milk when we dropped the bottle size!

We were in the same position 5 months ago OP!
I ended up going back to the gp and explaining that the gaviscon was doing more harm than good so they swapped us on to liquid omeprazole. That was a game changer for us! I've now weaned him off at 8 months old but I still make sure I keep baby upright for 20 mins or so after a feed and that definitely helps!
Could you request a different gp to last time?
Good luck! Xxx
