Is this normal? Almost 3 year old obsessed with remote controls

Hey everyone

Just wondering if anyone else has experience of this. I know liking remote controls is normal and from 6 months old I just ignored this to a degree because it's buttons and kids love buttons.

My son though is obsessed with remote controls he asks where they are all the time ( if we hide them) he goes to people's houses ( pre lock down / our bubble) and instantly looks for their remote controls. Sometimes it's the first thing he asks for in the mornings. If he sees a tv In a shop he wants the remote for it. I thought he would have grown out of it but it's still the same. He will cry his eyes out when you take them off him.

He's v clever development is fine otherwise but has a short attention span and I'm wondering if this obsession could be a sign of something? Or perhaps I should talk to a Dr about it?

Can you get him a remote with no batteries that he can have?

gg321 · 15/05/2021 20:38

Normal! u can get toy ones but they won’t be as much fun as the real thing!

Thanks for the replies

@wildeverose we've done the no batteries and v realistic toy remotes but he says " needs new batteries" and then asks someone to fix it

@gg321 do you think it's normal even with this degree of obsession? I know loads of kids like remotes but his obsession seems a bit extreme to me?

Thanks z

My daughter had an old remote that was longer needed. She used to take it to bed with her. She also took my sister's mini keyboard for the ipad to bed. We used to cut pictures of various gadgets out of the Argos catalogue and stick them on cardboard.
She has always loved gadgets. I don't think it's anything to worry about as he isn't even 3 yet.

Yes, I think obsessions can be quite normal, but also sometimes not.

What does he do with the remote - change channels etc.? Or just hold them?

I might stop using the TV for a while (tell him it is broken) and see if that fixes it? If he gets very distressed you would have to maybe rethink though, not worth too much upset.

My dd was obsessed with putting lids on milk bottles. She carried empty milk bottles and lids everywhere.

She's 17 now and she's not obsessed with milk bottles now, although she does like milk. It's

Thanks everyone when he has a remote he tells me the numbers and colours of the buttons he also knows what they do he says " back or menu" we don't actually watch a lot of tv at home the tv was "broken" for 6 months but he constantly asked when it could be fixed. If he does get the chance he likes to turn the volume up and down and change channels. He likes " fixing it " by turning the volume back on for example... But it's every day without fail he wants the remotes and is v attached to them

@SavoyCabbage that sounds quite cute! Hopefully he loses interest in them like your daughter with milk bottle tops!
