Newborn up all day

Hi - ftm here and needing some advice on my 2 week old. He is ebf and feeds well every 2-3 hours, has gained back his birth weight and more and is generally a happy bunny. The last few days though he was woken around 8am and then wont go back to sleep until the evening.

I managed to get him to sleep for 1 hour around midday by going for a walk today but he woke up as soon as we got home and has been awake since.

I am worried as all advice says they should only be awake for 30-45 minute windows.

Is he sleeping when feeding?

He feeds for 10-15 minutes until his eyes close and then comes off himself. I change his nappy to wake him up a little and feed on the other side for same amount of time. When I wind him, he wakes up and then is wide awake.

How much is he sleeping overnight? What's his total sleep in 24 hours?

He sleeps around 12 hours in 24 I'd say on average. He was sleeping through the day for the first week, but last few days seem to have changed.

What would happen if you didn’t wake him up? If you just let him sleep and then fed him again when he woke up?

What are you doing to get him to nap? Most newborns need help - rocking, singing, feeding, walk in buggy, white noise etc.

Can you change nappy before feed and just continue to feed?

@potteringalong I have tried this a couple of times and he will sleep for 30 minutes to an hour and then wake again. Is that better than nothing?

@nightmanagerfan I have tried feeding and rocking but he has started screaming when I try to get him to go down. He also makes his body really rigid- I'm not sure if he is uncomfortable with wind as he doesn't bring up a lot?

At 2 weeks sleep is anything but consistent. You'll prob find that next week it totally shifts again.

At this age, feed and cuddle on demand and just follow their lead

My DD was like this,we spent a week in the hospital and she was like a clock work,nappy change,feed,sleep and I thought it was amazing.
However,when we came back home it was as she suddenly wanted to stay awake all day,only occasionally having a short nap.She did sleep all night (EBF and co-sleeping which was great) but during the day not much worked(bouncers,AMBY hammock etc), so I was wearing her in the sling for most of her first few weeks.It did settle in few weeks but I was surprised by having a newborn who doesn't sleep during the day (had 3 DCs before).

Newborns usually just want to be held, not put down to sleep. Feed until he drops off, find a decent box set and enjoy the break.

I’m with other posters; don’t try and put them down! Feed to sleep and let them sleep. Just get a drink and the tv remote handy before you start!

Thanks, I think I've been expecting too much of him!! He's having a good sleep now and tomorrow I will get the box sets going
