12 month old - reflux still a problem

My DD recently turned 1 and has been suffering with horrible constipation for some time which I’ve put down to the gaviscon she’s on. Doctor first prescribed lactulose and now movicol but neither seem to help.

I recently decided to try and stop the gaviscon (I’ve tried many times in the past but hasn’t worked), I thought now that she’s 1 and crawling, sitting etc it’d be less of a problem but nope, she started being sick again and crying with what seems to be reflux pain. Her reflux also flares up really bad when she’s teething.

Should she have outgrown it by now? When did you notice an improvement? Is it possibly linked to an allergy? I’m just so fed up with seeing her in pain.

Sorry for all the questions, I do have a face to face doctors appointment for her next Friday but thought I’d ask for some advice on here in the meantime.

Poor you! Reflux is so tough for baby and for mum :(

Have you tried infant suppositories? My ds suffered from really bad constipation when we started weaning. We tried lactulose and movicol and neither were that effective (that being said it was a nightmare to give it to his so half of it was spat out) but gp then gave infant suppositories - You see results on 20 mins max! And the suppositories are very small so it’s not painful for them at all. I would definitely ask for them!

Re the reflux - my son had it really badly, but infant gaviscol didn’t work at all. He then was put on omeprazole for 2 months and that really helped but I didn’t really want him on that stuff. At 4 months old we stopped it and I just keep him upright as much as possible and I think by 6 months it had gone away on its own

Hope doctors appointment goes well for you! X

Oh and yes from what paediatrician told me if they still have it after 4/5 months then it is likely to be related to an an allergy. She said that most reflux cases resolve themselves by 6 months because the bit between the œsophages and stomach is stronger and keeps stuff down in the stomach

@Latinorapida Oh, I didn’t even think about suppositories! I’ll mention it when I see the GP, thank you!

Gaviscon has never stopped the sick but it did help with the pain, or so I like to think. She’s definitely better with it than without! I tried one bottle today without it and she was being sick all afternoon/evening Sad

Paediatrician told me to give it until 9 months when she’s sitting unaided but it didn’t help - she was 4 weeks premature so I did give it longer but still not any better. Always got fobbed off by the doctors so I’m hoping they’ll be more willing to help her now she’s older and she’s still suffering.

Thank you, appreciate it! X

Will be interested to see what your GP says. My little girl is 10 months, had her on Gaviscon since about 4 months and a few weeks later had to add in omeprazole. I've managed to cut down the gaviscon to once daily for the last month or so, she used to have three or four but she's still on the omeprazole, although I haven't updated the gp with her weight recently so she might be on a low dose now anyway!
Luckily she's never been concerned by it, it's just meant a lot of laundry and carpet cleaning!
Hope you get some answers x
