15 month old not even standing independently

Should I be worried?

He spends all day cruising & climbing anything and everything and he can stand just fine holding on to stuff, even with one hand, but as for independent stalking or walking, not a chance. He won’t do it. If I try to stand him up he complains and sits back down. He crawls around so fast that his hair moves! I think he’s be so much happier walking.

I know it can take a little longer for some babies to walk but I thought he should be at least standing independently by now?

I’m far from expert, but my little girl was quite late to most things because she’d just found a different way to do it. She didn’t seem bothered about walking because she could get around perfectly happily without doing it. I think not seeing any other babies in lockdown had an impact as she maybe didn’t know what she was aiming for? Obviously she sees us walk but I’m not sure she relates to us in that way. Since she started nursery she’s developed incredibly quickly, so perhaps as the world opens up again he might do the same?

I don't think it is a concern if they are able to weight bear. WHO motor milestones show a range of 7 to 17 months for standing alone.

DS was on the early side walking at 11 months, but was crawling and cruising at 5 months so waited until he was very ready to walk. Others go for it but are very unsteady. Yours is probably just waiting until he's sure!

@ElectricMistofelees I did think about this! He goes to swimming once a week but that doesn’t help with walking obviously Grin

I should probably take him to some bath groups... Blush

Baby groups, not bath!

He sounds absolutely normal to me. He will just do it when he is confident.

Mine stood up in the middle of the room (without pulling up on the furniture) at 16 months then walked across the garden independently for the first time two days later! I was like you and worried but mine was clearly waiting till they were sure!

Mine was quite late with standing alone and walking. I'd put toys up on a chair or table to encourage standing and playing and the walker was brilliant to encourage walking too. I remember stressing myself out so much about it but it's not something to worry about until a few months down the road yet. Just keep with the encouragement and it'll happen.

I just noticed my little one made big developmental leaps when things changed. She didn’t say any words, but the week my larceny’s started looking after her (within the bubble rules) she could suddenly say mama, dada and a few other things. I kind of figured she’d never needed to before because we were always there and I anticipated most of the things she wanted!

My DD was cruising and really fast crawling from 8 months, she didn't stand independently until she walked at 14 1/² months. She then progressed really quickly from walking to running. She never did the cute John Wayne waddle that early walkers do.

RandomMess · 12/05/2021 21:50

It's probably only a confidence thing. One of my DC would walk pushing a flimsy dolls buggy for 2 months before taking her first independent steps!

MrFlibblesEyes · 13/05/2021 11:06

Ds cruised confidently from 9 months and would do walks of about a metre between objects from 12 months. He didn't have the confidence to stand still without holding on until he started walk full time at 14 months. It was another month after that until he would actually stand himself up from sitting without pulling up!! Sometimes they just do everything in a weird order.

My DS was exactly the same. Once he was off walking that was it!
Mabelface · 13/05/2021 11:17

My daughter waited until she absolutely knew she could do it before deciding to walk at 18 months, and was running within a couple of weeks! Your boy sounds bang on developmentally.

Enb76 · 13/05/2021 12:31

Mine was not an early walker but once standing independently at 15 months went to running everywhere almost immediately - that was some heart in the mouth stuff as they always look like they are going to fall flat on their face.

RandomMess · 13/05/2021 13:20

I forgot my youngest didn't bother to walk until 17 months although had stood/cruised for a good few months before that.

Tolouse · 13/05/2021 13:24

My DD was one week off 18 months when she did it, so only just within normal range. She didn't ever crawl either
