Sore lump after stopping breastfeeding

Hello,
I stopped breastfeeding just over a week ago, I did this very gradually but I noticed today my breast is tender and there is a hard lump near the nipple area (i assume milk)

I was thinking of expressing the lump out but not sure if this would cause more production or just leave it to go away on its own?

Hoping someone knows, thank you 🙂

I would try to express it out, if you think it may be a blocked duct, for example. If you only have to express once or twice to get rid of it, your production should level off/decrease fairly quickly again afterwards. You don't want to run the risk of mastitis.

It sounds like mastitis. Mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue that sometimes involves an infection. The inflammation results in breast pain, swelling, warmth and redness. You might also have fever and chills.

Sometimes, you can treat it with a warm bath a massage but if it's infected you need antibiotics.

I remember having lumps when I stopped. I found I could massage them out in a hot shower.

Ok great thank you both.

Yes I feel ok right now but wouldn't want it to turn into a bad mastitis.

Will try the heat, massage and expressing then 🙂

I know you’re not feeding, but google dangle feeding and convert it into dangle expressing (if you can!) and it should help clear it quicker. Also, combing your boob down towards the nipple might help (I know, but it really might!).

And if it doesn’t go in a few days then go and see your GP Flowers

I googled this with great interest @PotteringAlong it makes sense because of gravity. Thank you for your comments.
I managed to express a little, but with difficulty because of lump location.
It is there again today but not sore so that seems to have helped. 👍🏻

@Mumplum1 it looks really odd but it does work!
