Hi all, first post here so apologies in advance if I break any forum etiquette. DS is just over 5 weeks old now and he has such a thirst.

Yesterday he drank 1400ml (49 uk oz) in a 24hr period. I think I only managed a coffee and a couple of pints of water as DW and I were so busy - I’ve read a few posts on here about parents who are concerned at the amounts their baby drinks, but they are talking about 5 month olds drinking 40 oz. so while the responses were somewhat reassuring, they were not wholly applicable.

To be fair, yesterday seemed to be some developmental milestone perhaps (he’s started smiling over the weekend) and he was just such a handful. By 8pm he had only slept 3.5 hours over about 8 different naps and in the 24hr period he only managed a total of 10.5 hours sleep compared to his more usual 15.

The 10 previous days he has drunk between 1000ml and 1145ml (35-40oz) but this is a big jump up. DW expresses BM every 3-4 hours and we bottle feed DS with that. Generally speaking she pumps about 800-1000ml and we make up any difference with formula. Of his 1400ml yesterday, 1260ml was BM and 140ml was formula. I’ve heard repeatedly from midwives/HV that you can’t over feed a breast fed baby, but they’ve all given different answers as to whether that still applies for expressed and bottle fed BM.

DS is gaining weight fast but he’s not overweight, just quite chubby. Last weigh was Friday and he was 5.38kg up from 4.95kg in a week. 4.27kg the week before that.

Should we be concerned? Thanks in advance for any help.

That does seem a lot for a 5 week old but if he’s happily drinking it and not being sick then it’s pretty much impossible to overfeed a baby, even formula as they will just turn their head away or bring it back up. I’d get him checked with you HV/midwife but if he’s weeing/pooing okay and otherwise content then he’s probably fine. Expressed breast milk is easier to drink and digest than formula too.

I started a thread re this back in January. Can't link on app but in infant feeding called ridiculously hungry newborn.

Essentially baby had silent reflux, the milk was calming the burning pain so she was constantly looking for more. While the advice is correct that you can't over feed, in my case it was masking an underlying issue. Screaming, restless, grunting, raising legs, short restless sleep.
