How much money do you give your children? I give them.their ages on money so youngest gets £8 a month and oldest gets £13 a month. Just recently I have felt my oldest needs more. What are your thoughts on amounts and pocket money in general. Thanks

My 8 year old gets £3 a weeks as a base pocket money but can earn more by doing specific tasks. 2 year old doesn’t get any yet

InDubiousBattle · 08/05/2021 17:34

It depends on what it's expected to cover I suppose. We give our 5&7 year olds £3 per week each which is just for treats, so any little toys or magazines they might want. They generally save it up then buy lego!

FartleBarfle · 08/05/2021 17:34

I thought that was a good rate but I read it as per week. I would think a weekly amount would be better, not saying it has to be £13 a week, but if you are encouraging them to save up for something with it, not just spend it all then I think that's teaching them valuable life skills.

12 yr old gets £7.50 a week, but she goes to costa etc with friends. Younger two get £10 a month.

Following - DD is getting a GoHenry card for her 8th birthday and we've set it to £1 a week to start with, but really we've got no idea what she's going to end up wanting!

FartleBarfle · 08/05/2021 17:36

I agree with getting a base rate and more for doing jobs and chores that are age appropriate.

We use the go Henry card. Works well. He’s set it so it automatically puts £2 a week into his saving pot and £1 into his spending pot. We have set up the extra tasks in Go Henry with an amount for doing them and if we tick that he’s done then he’ll be paid the when his pocket money is paid.

Both, 9 and 11, get £2 per week on gohenry and can increase with chores. They dont though, because grandad is far more generous. He pays them for telling him jokes Hmm

DeanImpala67 · 08/05/2021 17:50

9 and 12yr olds both get £15 a month, extra money only comes from Birthday/Xmas or gifts from Grandparents. Seems adequate for their buying needs at the moment and comparable to their friends.

I googled the rates that foster children get given, and give my kids that.
DH thought we err giving too much, I thought too little. This solved the argument.

DS1 (17) gets £15 a week in addition to a phone contract and clothing that he needs - he has to buy what he just wants if that makes sense? So if we just fancies another hoody, he pays for it. If he needs a new one, I buy it. He's about to start a job so in time I'll cut back on pocket money..

DS2 (12) just gets money as and when, which is usually just a bit to go to the shop with his mates at the weekend. Will be starting pocket money soon, probably £5 a week or something

scaredsadandstuck · 08/05/2021 18:00

DS1 almost 13 gets £6 a week and DS2 almost 9 gets £3.

Go Henry looks good but mine won't be getting mobile phones for quite some time yet, can they check balances from tablet/ laptop?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 08/05/2021 18:05

My 13yo gets £5/week but that is on top of clubs, hobbies, phone, clothes (basically everything).

ForeverBubblegum · 08/05/2021 18:14

My nearly 5 gets £2 a week, it's generally spent on tat from the pound shop, but dose at least stop the constant asking for things every time we go out.

They can. Mine has it set up to my iPad, I have it set to the parent account on my phone but you can switch between the 2.
