Hip dysplasia/Spica cast

Hello!

Not sure if this is the correct place to
Be posting this.

My 7month old daughter was referred for a hip scan at 6weeks due to being breech. She had multiple scans up until she was 12 weeks but was discharged as the physio had said everything was healing well and she didn’t need to go into a harness.

Well fast forward to now I noticed a few things with her legs I wasn’t happy with so asked for another scan and her left hip is not in the socket. Now that she’s 7months it’s been left to late for a harness so she is now going to need a spica cast for 12 weeks which will be put on in a few weeks.

I’m just wondering if anyone has any experience and can offer advice? I know she will adjust quickly but I feel so sad that she needs to have this when she’s so young.

How did you manage out and about? Did you still go for dinner etc? What about high chairs? Did your wee one still manage to play as normal?

I have an appointment with the orthopaedic doctor next week so will ask questions but would like to hear from parents first hand how they have managed!

Thankyou! X

Hello!
Do you have Facebook? There's a group for parents with children with hip dysplasia. Search for DDH UK on Facebook. Smile
My daughter had DDH but we thankfully avoided the spica cast. The Facebook group is very active and offers lots of good advice and support, so you might find it useful.

My grandson had hip dysplasia and the Facebook group mentioned by @Littletoaster was really useful. My son and DIL were able to hire a special car seat for my grandson while he was in his cast.

My son had his spica cast on when he was 6 months old and finished his treatment when he was 12 months old. He was fine in it and he managed to drag himself about if he wanted something. We just put him in bodysuits and socks. He had cardigans on top if he was cold. He fit well in his push chair and we got him one of those portable fabric high chairs but we had to get a different car seat as his spica cast was too big for the seat. It was daunting at first but you get used to it very quickly and ds wasn't bothered about it although he was in a little pain after his operation he soon recovered. Good luck with your dd treatment.

Oh and I forgot to add that ds is now a very active 7 year old with perfect hips and he can't even remember that this even happened.

My daughter had DDH which the harness fixed but I do know someone who's little girl had the cast. She adapted really well, even learned to walk with it. They carried on as normal, eating out (I think she either sat on parents knee or sat on a booth seat - she was older than your DD at the time), soft play, farms etc. They had a bugaboo pram which she fitted in.

Thank you very much everyone :) I will definitely join the Facebook group and look into hiring a car seat.

It’s all a bit daunting but as you say after a couple of days I’m hoping it will just be second nature x
