National Insurance Number

DC turned sixteen this week and hasn't yet received their NI number.

A few months ago I received a letter asking if child's name was correct (presumably because I got married a few years ago and changed my name) but the letter stated that if there was no change, no action was required.

Should the number have arrived by now? Who do I contact about this?

DC is keen to look for part time work.

This is the guidance from HMRC:

If you’re a UK resident aged 19 or under
You’ll normally be sent a National Insurance number automatically, in the 3 months before your 16th birthday, if both the following are true:
you live in the UK
a parent has filled in aChild Benefitclaim form for you
If you’re aged 16 to 19 and did not get one, call HM Revenue and Customs.

So just call and they will chase up her number.

I used tobwork in this area many moons ago.

Most 16 years old get thier NI number automatically as it stems from the child benefit. But the 2 most common reasons this didn't happen was either child benefit wasn't claimed or the child has had a change in thir name.

Call HMRC and ask for it.

minou123 · 01/05/2021 20:36

It might help if you had the number Blush

It is 0300 200 3500

Your DD will have to call and they won't tell her the NI number over the phone. The will send it in the post.

Could there be a delay because of covid? I moved back to the UK with my non-British husband in December as he got a new job here. He still doesn't have a NI number and they can't say when he will get it because they are short-staffed due to covid.

InpatientGardener · 01/05/2021 21:07

If they have a passport, you could create a personal tax account and use the passport number to get the NI letter up on screen which you can then print if needed. Assuming one has been assigned already www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account

Have you kept your address up to date with child benefit?

Your child's NI number and NI record all come from the child benefit. If the personal details on child benefit are out of date, I.e address, then they won't receive it automatically

RandomMess · 01/05/2021 21:23

@minou123 yep all up to date but for some reason that's the only thing I can think of for this happening- utterly bizarre.

dementedpixie · 01/05/2021 21:27

We're you claiming child benefit?
The number is normally sent out automatically a couple of months before they turn 16, if you were claiming CB for them.

Otherwise you need to phone for them to post it out

dementedpixie · 01/05/2021 21:28

Were not we're

DC is keen to look for part time work.

She can do this without her NI number so long as she has the right to work in the UK.

Seeline · 01/05/2021 21:30

My DS met the requirements but never got one. He rang them up just before his 18th birthday and they sent it to him.

DDs arrived fine!

How strange.
But the system isn't perfect. It works 99% of the time.
Maybe you are the 1% where is gone a bit wrong. Grin

Unfortunately if it happens to 1 child, it's likely happen to all your children.

As I say, it all seems from child benefit, so if there has been a glitch for 1 child, it's likely to be a glitch for all of them.

dementedpixie · 01/05/2021 21:35

Did your child get a child trust fund account as their NI number details will be on that info too in the format ZA836272Q (made that number up btw)

Saladd0dger · 01/05/2021 21:38

When DDs didn’t arrive in January I contacted hmrc and was told there was a backlog. It arrived in March.

RandomMess · 01/05/2021 21:39

@minou123 yeah it's weird isn't it (& frustrating) it's like when they updated the address some background tick box got unticked 🤦🏼‍♀️

ElaborateSalad · 02/05/2021 10:37

Yes, we claim CB. We have moved house a few times over the years, but Hmrc obviously know where we are because the letter about name change came to the correct address.

The trust fund thing is dealt with by dad, who lives elsewhere. I wonder if some confusion may have arisen from this, although surely it isn't uncommon for parents to split!

I'll give HMRC a ring on Tuesday.

Thanks for the replies.

It’s the child trust fund number. If you know that you know the NI number.

ElaborateSalad · 02/05/2021 13:28

The trust fund number isn't the right format so it can't be that.

dementedpixie · 02/05/2021 13:31

There's a Unique Reference number associated with the child trust fund and its that number that is the NI number
