4 week old with a cough - would you be worried?

I live with my mum and I have school aged siblings. One of them had a cough the other day and the school needed him to have a test, it came back negative. My 4 week old has now caught it, he's been coughing since he woke up yesterday morning. I'm not sure if I should worry as it seems like a chesty cough and he seems to cough lots and then he's ok for a while then he coughs again Sad. He seems ok otherwise though as he's not got a fever and he's feeding fine and having plenty of wet nappies etc.

Would you worry about this?

Could you see a gp or health visitor just to be on the safe side? He seems well in himself which is good but with little ones I'd always want to double check.

I don't generally worry, but I would be concerned about a 4 week old with any cough.

I would be very alert to any sign of breathing difficulties - more than 60 breaths a minute, chest pulling in, grunting when breathing. Any of these signs - straight to A and E. To be honest with a 4 week old I would be ringing 111 and getting advice to be cautious (I am a worried though!)

4 weeks is very young so I would ring 111 to get an out of hours GP appointment. Has your sibling’s covid test result come back yet?

Yes ring 111

Even without the risk of covid your baby needs to be checked out. Call 111 for advice.

Phone your gp for reassurance but if he’s feeding and well enough in himself I’d not worry overmuch.

I'd call 111 or the health visitor advice line if you have one.
