Nursing dress for wedding guest

Ok, this is not exactly a parenting problem, but - help! I have three weddings to go to this summer, and the new challenge of needing to get my boobs out at a moment’s notice. But I don’t like any of the nursing dresses I can find online - it’s all frilly and floral which I am decidedly not. I’m fairly tall, with knobbly knees (!), so would want midi or maxi, and I prefer block colours or strong modern prints and quite simple shapes. Anyone come across anything good lately?! I’ve looked at the ‘Can i breastfeed in it’ website which is a great initiative, but found it was much more geared towards casual wear. I’d prefer not to be in a jersey sack. (I reserve these for weekdays.) Or nude. Help! 😹

What sort of budget?

I got a gorgeous silvery grey silky tunic dress that had faux buttons that were poppers. I wore it over thick black tights (February wedding!) and could unpop to feed ( 5 month old dd) using my silvery wrap for 'modesty' should I need it.

What about nursing jumpsuits??

Thanks @Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout - good question. Maybe £70 or so. I appreciate the link. I just find I don’t particularly like any of the ‘official’ nursing stuff - I find it a bit fussy with all the lace and peplum and pleats. I’m also put off by the fact it’s usually maternity and nursing, and advertised by models with lovely round bumps. I have a bump but the baby is on the outside now so I don’t really want to show it off...!

Buy a wrap dress and put a little top inside it if you like, or get a skirt and top combo.

BerthaYoung · 30/04/2021 14:39

I love a jumpsuit @MBM18! As long as it’s not too tight across the tummy. Not always easy finding them to fit a taller torso though. I suppose it wouldn’t even need to be official nursing wear if it had a wrap or button top. I’ll have a look...

@somethingischasingme A silky tunic sounds like my kind of thing! Where was it from?

Halter dresses are great undo the tie flop boob out cover with a blanket if you feel the need. It really depends on how comfortable you are feeding in front of people

stopchewingeverything · 30/04/2021 14:51

I would have a look at www.moolkshop.com.au it's an Aussie shop but it's breastfeeding clothes only...not pregnancy/breastfeeding. I love their dresses and I think they ship Internationally. They have a sale on at the moment too

Twizbe · 30/04/2021 14:56

I had a great maxi from tallgirls.com that I wore for a wedding. It was a cross top. I know the tall collective has some of their old stock so you could look there

absolutehush · 30/04/2021 15:59

Just a word of warning on wraps - to get to the other boob you often need to undo the wrap fully.

Painful lesson learnt at a wedding

somethingischasingme · 30/04/2021 16:05

I got it from next - I'll see if I can find something similar...

chicanddiscreet.com/product/maxi-breastfeeding-dress-plum-presale/

This website does a nursing maxi in plain colours that would work for a wedding XX

Gorgeous dresses

It was most like the first one, I had a light silvery wrap and silvery accessories-it look a quite stern but it dressed up really well.

I went with a skirt and top for my brother's wedding. Both from Coast I think. This photo sort of shows you the style but with my face hidden and DS is 5 now so I don't think he's recognisable!

I tried a few dresses and looked at a couple I though I might be able to get adapted somehow but skirt and top was easier by far and I think still looked smart

Thanks everyone! I’m so touched by your efforts and suggestions ☺️ (Sorry I disappeared yesterday, DD 5 mo refused the last nap so no more MN time for me! 😭) There’s loads here to look through - and a useful cautionary tale about wrap tops, thanks @absolutehush! All the pictures and links are especially appreciated.

I think where I’m getting stuck is I usually prefer to wear round fairly high necks, as my chest is quite bony (with that and the knobbly knees I’m starting to sound like a skeletal freak...!) so button down or wrap tops just don’t feel like ‘me’. I need to try some things on I think. I will report back!

@BerthaYoung sounds like you're a Cos or Arket kind of girl. I would just look there and see if you can find something bf friendly. You could always buy a nursing slip (H&M have them) to go under a normal dress with a high neck which would allow you to pull up the dress and bf

absolutehush · 01/05/2021 13:06

Might be a bit too much but these have high necks?

I had some nice dresses from
Jojo Maman Bebe, one of which I wore to a wedding. It wasn’t super formal but I felt nicely dressed enough.

My sister used to wear things that could easily be pulled down (eg wrap or vest tops) with a little crop top underneath which she pulled up for a little more modesty. Means you’re not restricted to just nursing wear.

BendingSpoons · 01/05/2021 13:51

I went to one wedding where I wore a normal dress with a bit of a v neck and a vest top underneath to do one up/one down. Another time I wore a smart, high waisted skirt with a top and vest top underneath.
