Routine for 1 year old?

My DD is turning 1 on Sunday and lately she’s started waking up at 5am (previously was 6/6:30) so I bought blackout Velcro blinds but that hasn’t helped so I figured I need to change something in her routine.

Can anyone share their routines so I can get an idea please?

What tile does she go to bed @Vicky1989x and what are her naps like?

It's been quite cool here as well fir the last couple of nights, have you tried her with an extra layer?

TooMinty · 30/04/2021 19:16

I found age 1 was time to drop down to 1 nap per day. But that was more to get an easy bedtime, did still get some early rising.

DD was 1 10 days ago. We do...
Wake 6am but comes into our room for ‘quiet’ cuddles til 6.30?!
Breastfeed 6.45
Breakfast 8ish
Nap 9.15ish -10.30 (I wake her)
Lunch 1pm
Nap 2pm ish - 3.15 (again I wake her, by 3.30 latest)
Dinner 5pm
Bath and breastfeed 6pm ish
In cot 6.30/7ish and usually 10 mins to fall asleep
Aiming for 3.5 hr wake windows

This reads as a very rigid routine, it’s not! All times are ish, but this generally works for us and has done for the last 8 weeks or so.

Happy birthday for Sunday!

At 12 months we were doing:

7am (ish) : wake
9:30am: Nap (wake him after 15-20 mins)
1-3pm: Nap (wake if not up by 3pm)

He is now 14 months and waking between 6-6:30am so we've started reducing the first nap and think he'll be ready to drop it completely soon!

Do they have a morning nap? If so, perhaps delay the time of this so they are not using it to catch up from their early start. Reducing the length of this can also help. Are they waking up wanting something in particular? My 12 month old was waking up desperate for milk feed so I switched round breakfast and milk and that has helped delay the wake up a bit. Good luck.

Thank you everyone, some great advice.

@BunnyRuddington I did try an extra layer but didn’t help! She has 2 1.5 naps and she goes to bed between 7 and 7:30. I’ve tried reducing naps, putting to bed earlier and later and I get the same wake up!

@TooMinty I have considered this but she definitely still needs 2 naps!

@MoorGirl Very similar to my routine except her naps are usually 1.5 hours each - I have tried reducing them but maybe need to try again. And thank you!

@ali912 If I woke her after 20 mins she’d be so mad 😂 She usually wakes latest 4pm from her PM nap, maybe I need to wake her earlier.

@becca3210 Yes she has a morning nap - regardless of what time she wakes I put her down between 9:15 and 9:30. I’ve tried to lengthen this but she either gets really ratty or sleeps for too long! She does still have milk first thing, but she’s never desperate for it but maybe I could swap it around now she’s turning 1. Thank you.

They are all different 😊 Keep up the two naps, there's nothing worse than a grumpy overtired baby! Maybe you could try the quiet cuddles in your bed like Moorgirl. She might drop off again or at least you don't need to start your day at 5am...

BunnyRuddington · 01/05/2021 09:43

So she's getting 13 hours sleep overall which seems fine, it's just probably not at times that suit you.

If she were mine I'd be keeping her awake in the morning and keeping her busy, then letting her nap after lunch. Ideally you want her to have a couple of hours gap in the day and add that hours sleep into the morning.
