Any bright ideas from you guys on getting messages about the importance of talking with preschool children across to illiterate parents?
Our local childrens centre theme next year, not sure how to get info to those families who REALLY need it but will not /can not read it. Slightly preaching the converted just talking with those families who use the centre, they are the ones who want to give their kids a good start and are getting out and doing something about it.
The area has has a higher than average number of lone/jobless / depressed/illiterate or young parent families, and below average language and social skills shown by kids entering school.

Maybe some of it's about lack of confidence. Some fun activities for mums/kids with the incentive of free snacks/food/something? Face painting session with expert tied into fairy story session? Drama based on films - doesn't the Film Education board give out freebies? Free tickets for those who come to singing/drama sessions on films - say Ratatouille. Video making sessions.

local radio advert? Posters around the place that say "tell everyone you see with young kids" (or words to that effect)?

So you're with a local children's centre and you want to get your message out to more people? Is that what you're saying? Sounds like you need to use a lot of word of mouth. Could your "converted" parents be involved in getting a friend along? Perhaps to a special session to let them know about what you can do for them? And have some sort of reward for them for bringing a friend?

I'm a parent who uses teh centre. A theme for next year is "converstations with children". Lots of us are trying to think up ways of getting messages across to parents who use and those who don't use the centre.
Thanks for the ideas, face painting and story telling, radio, drama all wil be fed back to teh Theme team.
