Cotbed bedding?

My baby boy is 3 months soon and I have just set up his cot bed. It seems massive 240cmx70cm and I'm wondering what bedding to use when I transition him in. He is currently in a snuzpod next to my bed with a cellular blanket which will be way too small to securely tuck in to the cotbed. I won't be moving him in until at least 6 months (although the way he is now I doubt he will go in!!). But wanted to try him in naps now and then to get him used to it. What bedding do people use in these once he gets to 6 months? I was thinking about trying sleeping bags but he kicks off his cover as it is and seems to hate the feeling of being restricted so not sure how he will be with a sleeping bag?

We used sleeping bags and now sleep suits - my son moves around in his sleep far too much for blankets!

No bedding. A sheet to cover mattress and sleeping bag

Definitely try a sleeping bag. Duvets and blankets aren't really safe when they're little and are a pain as they kick them off, get tangle up in them etc

For naps I don't think they need any bedding. It's good to differentiate between nap time and bed time so bed time involves getting PJs and sleeping bag on, but at nap time they just sleep in clothes.

Another vote for sleeping bag. My eldest was a massive fidget so they were great for him.

Yup, sleeping bags are great. You can get a range of weights/togs too; light for summer, heavy for winter, etc.

Nothing for naps. Sleeping bags for night time or when hot enough just a sleepsuit.

The sleeping bags allow a bit of movement.

Ds had sleeping bags
Dd had jojo maman Bebe sleep smugglers. (Sleeping bag with legs)

Fitted sheet for the mattress and baby in a GroBag. That’s it. Completely empty cot otherwise.

We had some sleep suits from Mothercare that were padded so that they were effectively like a sleeping bag with legs.

Mothercare’s gone now but there might be other places that sell similar sleepsuits.

Thanks everyone! What do they wear under sleeping bags as online guidance contradicts. Is a long sleeved body suit ok rather than a short sleeved bodysuit and a sleep suit which he wears at the moment?

Definitely sleeping bags. My dad, who became a father in 1979 and a grandfather in 2015 and is fascinated by changes in what is available to parents declared them the one thing he could see would have been an absolute gamechanger with me!

My kids both had sleeping bags. Thicker in winter and lighter ones in summer. They wore them until about 18m, depending on the season, and then I used a small duvet after that. My DD is 3.5 and still currently sleeps in the cot bed with the side off and has a cot size duvet.

What they wore underneath depended on the temperature. You can get charts that give you suggested layers from gro company I think. Most we did a a cotton sleepsuit in winter (sometimes a short sleeved vest under if it was really cold) and then for warmer weather they wore a long or short sleeved vest only. Really depends on your child and your house temperature though. Some like to be toasty, some are hot sleepers

Doesn't everyone do sleeping bags these days? You can get them cheap as chips if needs be.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 29/04/2021 20:17

Neither of mine would sleep in a sleeping bag. They had a fitted sheet on the mattress. Then slept "feet to foot" with a flat sheet and fleece blanket* tucked in.

*exact quantity of blankets depending on weather.

Sleeping bag!

Also definitely recommend sleeping bags. I have stocked up on secondhand ones in different sizes/togs for my DS before he was born and got a couple more when he was starting to outgrow the first ones. FB marketplace and ebay have loads. My son is just coming up to 13 months and still in them. Mostly we use a 1 tog or 2.5 tog with long sleeved PJs or a onesie underneath (depending on how warm his room is that night - we have a Gro Egg room thermometer also got off FB marketplace for like £4). In summer we used a 0.5 tog with sometimes just nappy underneath if really warm. I find he sleeps much better with the bag. We used blankets the first couple of weeks (he didn't fit in the bags at first) and he slept very badly as kept kicking them off.

One thing I will add is that when I tried to start putting him down for daytime naps in the cotbed, in the run up to 6 months, he was having none of it. He still doesn't like napping in there now, but will happily sleep in it at night. Daytime naps currently are either on someone's lap or in his buggy. I was dreading moving him to his own room at 6m because of the difficulty I'd had with using cotbed for naps. I delayed until 7m. But then found that he suddenly slept much better at night once he was in his own room (I think we were disturbing him).

Good luck!

Sleeping bags here, using the guidance in the Grobag website (even when in much cheaper! supermarket bags) and a room thermometer takes the worry out of it.
DD is nearly two and enjoys going snuggling under a blanket when playing now so we are looking at moving her to bedding when she outgrows her latest batch of bags.
