Early potty training

Ds is 21mths old, he regularly tells me when he has had a poo so dm suggested getting him a potty and putting it in the bathroom so that it is not alien to him when we come to potty training. Anyway, first time he saw it, he put it on his head so, I told him that it was for a poo/wee. The next time I went to sit on the toilet he sat on the potty (fully clothed). So, I thought I may aswell encourage him and removed his nappy the next time I went to the toilet myself. Again he sat down on the potty.

A few hours later he pointed to his nappy and said poo and pointed to the bathroom , he hadn't poo'd by this point so I rushed him upstairs, put him on the potty and sure enough he had a poo. I gave him massive praise and the following day he hasked to use it again, this time he just strained but def looke dlike he was trying.

Anyway, I haven't been very forthcoming with making a real effort to potty train as many people have warned me not to start too soon. However, I have had conflicting advice now with people saying he must be ready as he is actually asking to go. He also tells me he needs a wee and points to the potty but by the time I have taken off his nappy he has already been, so not sure if he is telling me he has weed or he needs to and I'm not quick enough?

So, do I go full-on potty training, and if so what's the best way to go about it? Or do I leave it a few more months when he is a little older?

Blog

Not that I have written anything in ages...there is a section header for Elimination Communication with some links etc that I found useful and hopefully your friend will too.

Where did you get that virtual model thing from on your blog?

laundrylover · 17/11/2007 21:51

BE, just been reading your blog and wanted to say well done on your weight loss. I've lost just over 3 stone this year and am having those 'these are size 12 pants' feelings - I reckon you'll get there one day judging by how well you've done so far.

nappyaddict, Model Thing

laundrylover, Thanks for the kind words I doubt I will lose any more and TBH I am more than happy at a size 18. Congratulations to you, on your fantastic weight loss, sounds like you are loving your size 12 jeans

You're so right to be happy at size 18 and you look great. I was only meaning that if you do want to go for that last model look then you have the willpower and the strength to do it.

I was telling my sis all about EC on Sunday -she is due in May...other sis due in July and she will be a real contender as has lived in nappy free Africa! My SIL is also due (babies everywhere for me too!) but she is a dispicable nappy person despite trying my cloth for all of one week with her first!!

BabiesEverywhere · 22/11/2007 17:20

LL, Thanks for your post

I would be interested to hear about your sister's experience in nappy free africa

laundrylover · 22/11/2007 22:26

BE this will be her first baby so she hasn't actually done the nappy free herself...I just meant that she is of the mindset that most babies in the world manage without nappies/kids without a TV etc. so would be well up for ECing.

That said, she may find the whole reality of parenting a little less rosy than she thinks it's going to be IYKWIM!

BabiesEverywhere · 23/11/2007 14:51

I was hopeing that she might of seen/heard other children/babies being pottied from an early age. She might be able to get advice straight from the source

laundrylover · 24/11/2007 20:58

BE, I've seen this all around the world - in China they have the split pants and there are little poos around every tree on the street and in Namibia I saw a tribal woman sit her baby on her legs and encourage him to poo in the sand! However all this was pre babies and I never thought to ask for tips.

I also met a grandma who was trying to relactate to feed her orphaned grandchild. This was the norm and she said her milk would come in soon....I hope it did.

BabiesEverywhere · 24/11/2007 21:10

That is interesting

Relactation is a lot more common in less developed countries, I read that even adoptive mothers who have never given birth, can (in most cases) produce milk...Isn't that just amazing

I hope that Grandma was successful
