3 week old bad wind/reflux/colic?

Hello

Just after a bit of advice from people that might have gone through this (probably most mums out there as this seems so common!)

My baby is 3 weeks old, she was born at 38 weeks but is putting on weight well and also breastfeeds well after a tricky start. The past week she’s been in obvious discomfort, knees high, red faced and arching chest sometimes after feeds but mostly at night and when she wakes up from naps. At night she is very fussy on the boob.

I’m using infacol and have noticed a slight difference in that she burps better.

I literally can’t put her down in her Snuzpod at night, so I’ve been sleeping more in the day when my husband can have her and staying up most of the night with her sleeping on my chest. I know it’s completely normal for newborns to want to be on their mums, and I love it, but the no sleep will start to be an issue. I can literally put her down so many times in the night (on her back) when she’s in a deep sleep from being upright after a feed on me, but then starts the reflux noise and then she is sick. So I don’t even try anymore!

Does anyone have any tips?

I am well aware that she is so young and digestion working itself out. But in the short term any tips would be so appreciated!

Thanks xx

Hi, vyou sound very sensible and as though you have a great attitude! Congratulations on your newborn.

Yes, as you say, digestive discomfort is very common, even to be expected in the early weeks when babies' digestive system are brand new. Things tend to start settling down from about 10-12 weeks usually.

As you're breastfeeding, can I suggest the side- lying position at night and just cosleeping safely like that, with your baby? I've always got through the early weeks by doing this.

@Somethingsnappy thanks so much for the reply. Yes hoping it settles around 12 weeks!
Really good idea to BF and side sleep, I’ve just watched some vids on lullaby trust for safe sleeping. Could be the answer. Xx

I've done this with all four of my children, in the early weeks. I'd start dozing duro g the feed and we'd both wake up a couple/few hours later for the next feed. It saved my sanity!

Congratulations on your baby! Have you looked into switching up your own diet? I was told by MW some things I ate might give baby more wind like broccoli, kale, onions etc. SIL was told to stop eating so much dairy to see if it helped and it did. It might be worth looking into!
