3 week old seems constantly hungry

As the title says

I'm bf my 3 week old and I've been really struggling the past few days as he seems constantly hungry. As soon as I've fed him and burped him and put him down, he wants fed again. I know this is probably normal but I'm exhausted as I'm not sleeping much and I haven't managed to go out much as he constantly wants to be fed. I don't feel like I have time to do anything else either.

Just looking for reassurance that this will pass and any advice on how to get through it.

Hi congratulations! If a 3 week old seems constantly hungry, they probably are. As long as a very young baby is full, comfortable, the right temperature and clean, they will usually be quite settled so either asleep, or quiet and calm. All you can do is keep feeding them if they seem hungry, but yes, it does pass. Could be a growth spurt?

Do ask your health visitor for advice though, has he been weighed?. My youngest screamed constantly, very unsettled even after feeding. It was a yes to all the usual questions; does she have plenty of water and dirty nappies, do your breasts feel empty after a feed, how long does she feed for, etc so her tongue tie wasn't picked up until nearly 12 weeks and she was very dangerously underweight.

Plenty of wet nappies, not water. She had plenty of wet nappies. Stupid phone!

I’m sure 3 weeks is the first growth spurt. I remember it being a tough time for me. I just fed fed fed and barely got off the sofa. If your partner is back at work I’d ask him to take the baby for a little bit before he goes so you can get snacks, water, phone charger, remote all in arms reach before he goes.

Is breastfeeding going well generally? Are you getting enough wet and dirty nappies and weight gain ok? You’re not in pain? Maybe get some feeding support if you need it but if it’s just cluster feeding there’s not a lot to be done except ride it out, it does get easier with time xx

It is normal and it will pass. It is a tough phase though. The feeds will space out and get shorter over time.
