Hi
I'm after some advice in relation to my nearly 4 yo dd.
She's on the whole well balanced but when she's upset finds it hard to express herself other than wailing - literally.
These episodes involve her taking herself off, sitting and well, wailing even when she's been apologised too or comforted and I'm not sure how to handle it. They seem wildly out of proportionate to what's actually happened for example the other day her best friend called her silly. Not nice I know but after best friend apologising it took a good 10 mins to calm her down
Should I continue to comfort her or ignore it, I just don't know.
She's an only child and on the whole sweet natured but I worry we're not providing her with the resilience she'll need in life but I'm not sure how to handle these episodes.
Any advice would be welcome

Hi OP. My son is very very similar. He's 5. He wails, shrieks and cries at things that seem very small to me. He's very intelligent and very sensitive. We're just trying to work on communication basically. We explain to him each time that it's better to talk to us to communicate his feelings so that we can help. It is getting better little by little. My son's sensitivity includes struggling sometimes with sensory issues, noise etc. But also struggling with the depth of his feelings. Does this sound similar in any way to your daughter. If so, look up 'sensory processing sensitivity'. Its eye opening!

P. S. So we try to help him find the words to explain his feelings to us etc. And each time it happens, remind him that we can only help by knowing what he's feeling. They are taking the same approach at school too.
