Can naps be too long?

My DS is 5 months old and is currently napping. He fell asleep at 1.05pm and it is now 3.45pm. How long is too long? Should I be waking him up from long naps? I have just been letting him sleep. Mostly he only has 3 naps a day and sometimes they are only 30 mins long. Other times like today he has a big nap. He normally goes to bed around 8.30pm. I wish I'd have known it was going to be this long I could have cleaned my windows... (instead I'm drinking tea and reading mumsnet).

I use an app called Huckleberry which helps me track my daughters sleep, feeds etc. They send a monthly newsletter and I remember reading that at that age, naps shouldn't exceed 2 hours time so as to not affect night time sleep. We followed this and it worked for us!

Follow awake windows!

Maybe a growth spurt? Dd is 7 months. She had a few days a while ago of having huge naps which didn't affect her night sleep but she also outgrew all her clothes. I assumed the naps were part of the growth spurt

I just let mine crack on with it on the very odd occasion she has a long nap. Do wish they'd have some sort of warning signal in advance though!

Nope, they need as much sleep as they need. If bedtime is unaffected by longer naps then there is no issue.

No i leave mine. Usually he naps 1hr on average. Some days only 30mins. On days he naps 2+ hrs I usually find he’s got a new tooth coming the next day, or starts something new. I therefore think they just need them sometimes and it’s their bodies way of coping with growth/ pain/ development/ sickness.

Thanks everyone! He normally has another nap before bed but due to the late wake up we have just fed him and put him to bed now. He has been up 4 hrs now so is definitely over tired. So fingers crossed we have a good night and I've not messed it up!
