How many words can/could your LO say at 17mo and which words? Do/did they say them in the right context?

Mama, gramaaaaa, juice, no(naa), yes, more, again, animal noises (baa, neigh, snap snap, miaow, raaargh, etc) up, bubbles, probably a few more. In context for the above, but lots of not in context stuff too.

Rollerbird · 19/04/2021 13:40

This is the 2nd child, the older one said hardly anything at that age possibly mama and noises you couldn't understand!

majesticallyawkward · 19/04/2021 13:51

@Rollerbird it's the other way round with my dc, first talked early (and hasn't shut up since), 2nd is 17 months and has a handful of words and series of dances he uses to communicate. I feel the few words really speak to his priorities- cheese, more, dog, poo/done poo, no geen (loosely translates to get that vegetable away from me now), yeah yeah yeah num num! 😂

We've got a cute 'ah-ah' accompanied by a wagging finger when she does something she knows she shouldn't!

ThatLibraryMiss · 19/04/2021 14:04

Mine was talking in sentences by then but she crawled late and didn't walk until 15 months. They're all different.

BertieBotts · 19/04/2021 14:14

Could hardly say anything at that age. The big word explosion happened around 2 / 2 and a quarter. He is now 2.5 and I've totally lost count! He talks constantly.

BertieBotts · 19/04/2021 14:23

OK just looked back at my notes. About 3 words and about 10-15 sounds (or inconsistent actual syllables, said in a particular pattern) which consistently meant things but weren't really words. And a few baby signs.

He did a lot of babbling with intonation. It was incredibly cute but he'd think he was saying real words and then look really annoyed when you didn't understand him!

LadyVymes · 19/04/2021 14:28

One. Mum. But she has Phelan-McDermid syndrome and everything is taking a long time. She’s now three and has about ten basic words. She tries really hard though.

Eminybob · 19/04/2021 14:30

My DS is 2y5m and can say less than your dc.
We are on the waiting list for a SALT referral though (and I need to make a mental note not to open these types of thread as it just makes me more worried Blush

Timper · 19/04/2021 15:08

Zero. Never stops babbling though. They’ll get there.

niclw · 19/04/2021 19:40

Zero! My DS now 2 years and 7 months started saying words at 2 years and 3 months. He now talks in sentences of 4 words some of the time.

namechangeaga1ne · 20/04/2021 00:17

My first could say about 30, point at animals and letters and say most of them by that age. My third is now the same age as yours and can say about 6 or 7 words and can't recognise any letters or animals etc. They're all different. I wouldn't worry.

DramaAlpaca · 20/04/2021 02:01

My middle son was talking in sentences at 17 months. His older and younger brothers only had a handful of words at that stage. As everyone says, they are all different.

Bellaphant · 20/04/2021 04:45

My ds is now 21 months, at 17 months he had 10-15 words (boob, dada, mama, yeah, up, hug, bed, more, 'raa', woof), but he had the same words from about 14 months to 17, then his words exploded and now he's fairly regularly saying 2-3 word phrases..

IHateCoronavirus · 20/04/2021 04:55

I have a clip of my firstborn (at 17 months, I know because his newborn brother was in it) saying. “It’s an oval, perhaps it is the moon!” When pointing at a white oval on a black surface.
He is now 15yo and only speaks in gruntish.

Conversely, the aforementioned new born brother, was incomprehensible until the age of four and had copious amounts of speech therapy. He is now 14yo and won’t stop talking, about anything and everything in great, great detail ALL THE TIME!
Be very careful what you wish for! Grin

EcoCustard · 20/04/2021 05:31

Dc1, only babbling at that age.
Dc2 was talking many words and sentences.

Dc3 said nothing, a little babbling.
Dc4 is 23 months and says about 6 words, babbles and it’s all coming together.
They get there. All different. I will add that Dc2 talked early, began at 10 months and at 5 years old never, stops talking ever. Grin

My DD is 18 months and she's really started speaking loads. Not sure how many words but she parrots us all then uses those new words in the right context.
She says eyes, ears, nose, tummy, foot, mummy, daddy, then add dinner time she'll go to the stairs and shout 'wake up!'Grin
She says kitchen, cook, lolly, icecream, hiccup when she's hicupping, she says her own version of bless you when she sneezes, ow when she's hurt. I could go on but she's picked up the most in the last month and I'm sure it's mostly because everyone has been home so much more than normal times that she has loads of us to learn from.
